HIGH AUSTRIAN DECORATION FOR PROFESSOR ROBERT HAAS

    NEW YORK, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- On July 21, 1993, the Austrian Consul General in New York, Mr. Walter Greinert awarded Prof. Robert Haas with the Commander's Cross, one of Austria's highest decorations for merits in the arts.  Outstanding in the fields of printing, calligraphy and photography, Robert Haas was a much sought-after teacher back in the 1920s and 30s in Austria and later in America.
    Born in Vienna in 1898, he graduated from the city's Technical University, and later also studied economics and art history as well as calligraphy, type design and heraldry with the famous Rudolf von Larisch at the Academy for Applied Arts.
    In 1925, Robert Haas founded his own hand press studio, The Officina Vindobonensis, together with the painter Carry Hauser and the printer Fritz Siegel.  In addition to its own publications, the press also acted as publisher for writers and poets like Hofmannsthal, Otto Stoessl and Alfred Kubin.  The monogram Haas designed for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is still in use today.  His clientel included many more of his famous contemporaries, among them Arturo Toscanini and Clemens Holzmeister.
    One of the highlights of his international career was the participation at the Paris World's Fair in 1937 where Robert Haas' photomural designed for the Austrian Pavilion won him the Grand Prix and the Gold Medal.
    Forced to leave his country soon after the invasion of Hitler in Austria, Robert Haas found refuge in the United States in 1939.  He moved to New York where he founded The RAM Press and worked together with the most important Museums of the City (Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Frick-Collection) and some of New York's leading galleries.  He also taught calligraphy, lettering and typography at Yale University, at the Cooper Union Art School, and a the Department of Visual Arts, SUNY at Purchase.
    Robert Haas is married with two daughters and lives in Valhalla, N.Y.
