HIDING INMATE CAUGHT AFTER AREA ALERT.

CASTAIC - A Pitchess Detention Center inmate was caught Monday morning during an attempt to escape the Saugus jail complex in a laundry truck, officials said.

Sirens sounded, area residents were alerted and nearby schools were locked down See lock down. at about 9 a.m. while authorities searched the Pitchess grounds and found the inmate hiding in a laundry truck after fleeing from the north-facility jail, said Lt. Joanne Sharp of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The department runs four separate jails on the Pitchess grounds.

``He did not leave Pitchess, but he did leave the north facility,'' Sharp said. ``He tried to go out in the laundry truck, and they did apprehend him.''

The California Highway Patrol sent signals on the nearby Golden State Freeway, cautioning motorists to avoid picking up hitchhikers.

A siren system alerts Santa Clarita Valley residents near the jail in case of escapes or escape attempts. Officials at Castaic and some Newhall School District schools lock down To restrict the functionality of a system. In such cases, the system may be said to be "locked down." their campuses to prevent escapees from entering.
