NHIN National Health Information Network ). The HIEs will participate in a collaborative dubbed the NHIN Trial Implementations Cooperative to develop standards-based interfaces and interoperability specifications. Additionally, they will use the cooperative to test and demonstrate their ability to exchange private and secure health information among providers, patients and other healthcare stakeholders. The nine HIEs that were awarded the HHS contracts are: CareSpark, incorporating a tri-city region of eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia; Delaware Health Information Network; Indiana University, Indianapolis; Long Beach Network for Health, Long Beach/Los Angeles; Lovelace Clinic Foundation, New Mexico; MedVirginia, central Virginia; New York New York, state, United States

Results of the NHIN HIE testing, and the specifications developed, will be shared through three scheduled public forums to facilitate widespread review and feedback for the development of the NHIN.
The NHIN will be a "network of networks," comprised of state and regional HIEs and other networks connected by a system of interoperability specifications for the secure exchange of healthcare information.
