HERMES SoftLab Joins Storage Revolution.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Toigo Partners International (TPI (Tracks Per Inch) The measurement of the density of the storage channels on a disk or tape. Track density on magnetic disks has reached 125,000 tpi (125 Ktpi). See bpi, areal density and magnetic disk. ), storage products test laboratory TPI Technologies, and the Data Management Institute, a professional development community for IT decision-makers who manage and protect data, announced today two new developments in their consumer-driven storage management initiative, StorageRevolution.com.

First, the Data Management Institute has completed a requirements analysis (project) requirements analysis - The process of reviewing a business's processes to determine the business needs and functional requirements that a system must meet.  for the burgeoning freeware Software that is distributed without charge and which may be redistributed without charge by its users. However, ownership is retained by the developer who may change future releases from freeware to a paid product (feeware). Enabling PCs to be monitored from a central console, it was superseded by the DMTF's Common Information Model (see CIM).  conducted survey-based interviews with more than 200 IT professionals working within large, medium and smaller firms. The survey process captured detailed information about the state of current storage and data management technology from the viewpoint of managers and administrators, and produced a detailed requirements list for functionality that will need to be provided by the CAPSAIL framework.

These requirements will be translated into design and code by HERMES SoftLab, Europe's premiere Software Engineering and IT Solutions Company, headquartered in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with subsidiaries in five countries, including Mountain View, CA. HERMES has today joined the StorageRevolution effort and will contribute significant intellectual property and effort to bringing the StorageRevolution effort to life.

Jon Toigo, chairman of the Data Management Institute and founder of the StorageRevolution.com initiative, the addition of HERMES SoftLab to the CAPSAIL development community comes at just the right time. "Since announcing the effort late last year," Toigo reported, "we have been busy doing what none of the industry-sponsored storage management standards groups have done: we have been asking end users of technology what they need. The results have been gathered and we have some excellent insights into what is required to facilitate strategic, application-facing storage management. HERMES brings the recognized software design competency COMPETENCY, evidence. The legal fitness or ability of a witness to be heard on the trial of a cause.  and storage technology expertise to push CAPSAIL 1.0 into the real world."

StorageRevolution.com was formed last year as a consumer-driven alternative to industry-based storage management initiatives. Early on, the effort attracted over one hundred participants via its website at www.storagerevolution.com. Toigo said, "It quickly became apparent that, before we began developing software, we needed to get a fix on user requirements - something that does not appear to have been done by the other developers. The Data Management Institute began collecting survey input from companies and developing use cases to guide the challenging development of the free framework."

At the same time that CAPSAIL requirements were being defined, Toigo opened a dialog with HERMES SoftLab, which has done behind-the-scenes software development for prominent players in the storage industry for more than a decade. He visited HERMES headquarters in the Slovenian capital, in concert with the launch of the HERMES Storage Competence Center in September 2006.

Toigo said, "I met with HERMES management and the staff and was, frankly, amazed a·maze

by the depth of knowledge of the crew and their many accomplishments that had never been reported in the trade press. There was a natural chemistry between what we were seeking to do and intellectual property that this firm had already developed. That they were willing to contribute their resources to StorageRevolution.com was an unexpected plus."

"The concept behind StorageRevolution.com is the ultimate storage management software challenge and our Storage Competence Center is the right address for delivering it," said Peter Testen, HERMES SoftLab's CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "What is simplifying the whole process and also gives us additional motivation, is working directly with end users and the ability to have direct feedback on the real needs in the storage environments."

Armed with the capabilities of HERMES SoftLab, StorageRevolution.com is poised to deliver on its vision: a vendor neutral, application aware, storage management framework. Unlike other industry efforts, which have been hamstrung ham·string

by proprietary vendor interests and failed to produce a working approach to date, CAPSAIL does not require the cooperation of storage hardware vendors to realize its goals of heterogeneous, application-facing, storage management. It is user driven.

The CAPSAIL framework is simply a mechanism to enable users to pick best of breed management software and to identify their services for use across storage arrays from any vendor. It is conceived as middleware Software that functions as a conversion or translation layer. It is also a consolidator and integrator. Custom-programmed middleware solutions have been developed for decades to enable one application to communicate with another that either runs on a different platform or comes from a  between applications and end users who require storage resources and data management services and software and hardware that comprise the storage infrastructure.

Said Toigo, "Once available, this framework will provide consumers with the ability to begin purpose-building their infrastructure to meet their own business needs rather than settling for `one-size-fits-most' storage products from vendors that fail to satisfy anyone's requirements very well."

A design meeting scheduled for November 1 in Orlando, FL will lay out the timeline for the work that remains to be accomplished. Testing will be performed at the HERMES Storage Competence Center in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and at TPI Technologies in Clearwater, FL. TPI Technologies is the testing laboratory of the Data Management Institute.
