HERE COMES THE SON; THOUSANDS GATHER FOR EASTER SERVICES AT CSUN.

Byline: Michael Coit Daily News Staff Writer

At the urging of friends, Rob Marrero and his wife, Kelliann, brought their two sons Sunday to the Easter service led by the Shepherd of the Hills Church at the California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , Matador matador

As the crowd swelled to some 7,000 people, the Marreros had a little trouble finding their friends, but they felt warmly welcomed on a blustery blus·ter

``It's very friendly. Everybody's welcoming, and it's very uplifting,'' Marrero said, with 2-year-old Roy at his side, while his wife followed 1-year-old James around the field. ``Hopefully this is the first of many family days on Easter.''

The second annual service in the stadium, one of the largest Easter gatherings in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , drew many more people than the 3,100 members of the congregation that normally meets in the Porter Ranch church.

So large was the crowd gathered on the home field of the CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  football team, the team's head coach, Ron Ponciano, joked that the school would need a stadium expansion. ``You keep bringing your friends, they're going to have to build end zone seats.''

Easter sunrise services found clear, cool weather replacing dark and gloomy skies from overnight.

The traditional sunrise service at Vasquez Rocks Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is a 905 acre (3 km²) northern Los Angeles County, California USA park acquired by LA County government in the 1970s. It is in the Agua Dulce vicinity between the Antelope Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley just north of Los Angeles and seen easily  in Agua Dulce Agua Dulce is Spanish for "sweet water". The annual Hollywood Bowl Easter Sunrise Service was held at the First United Methodist Church First United Methodist Church is a common name for the first United Methodist church established in a particular locality. Many First United Methodist Churches exist around the world.  in Hollywood, the fifth consecutive year the event has been forced to move because of renovations at the bowl.

In an emotional departure from his usual words of hope at Easter, a frail Pope John Paul II Pope John Paul II (Latin: Ioannes Paulus PP. The Rev. Dudley C. Rutherford also offered a prayer for peace in Yugoslavia as he opened his remarks at the celebration service inside the Northridge stadium.

``Even today, I do not understand what's happening over there,'' Rutherford said. ``But I know that there are innocent people on both sides suffering.

``And Father, as you cleared the skies today, bring peace for those people. We just ask your blessing on them . . . that you would bring peace to not only them but to the four corners of the world.''

The somber beginning contrasted with Rutherford's joyous pronouncement of the Christian season of joy and redemption.

A live band and large choir helped carry the message with numerous contemporary songs. Their music and voices were carried over speakers spread across the field, and their images were shown on a massive video screen mounted on a large truck.

The event's scale also was evident at the refreshment booths, also known as the doughnut ministry.

Organizers made available no less than 216 dozens of doughnuts, 100 dozen bagels, 1,200 cream cheese packets, and enough coffee, tea and orange juice to fill 10,000 cups, said Del Sherrill, the refreshment coordinator.

``They really put on quite an event,'' said Melissa Johnson of Marina Del Rey, toting her 2-year-old son Jeremy. ``It's fun. It's good fellowship for him.''
