HER TURN; HUNDREDS FLOCK TO LIBRARY TO GREET FORMER FIRST LADY.

Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Staff Writer

Among the hundreds of people who stood in line for hours to have Nancy Reagan autograph her book, ``My Turn,'' the Kovach family of Baltimore stood out.

Henrietta Kovach and 6-year-old Sarah had donned matching pink mother-daughter dresses and white pearls for their brief encounter with the former first lady, who scheduled the book-signing session at the Reagan Presidential Library to celebrate her 78th birthday, which actually was Tuesday.

``I love her,'' said Sarah, who made a red bead bead

Henrietta Kovach said she grew up in a staunch Republican family and her husband, John, became more conservative when he married her. The family holds the former first family in such high esteem, in fact, it traveled to California just for the book signing.

John said his admiration for the Reagans is more about Ronald Reagan as president than a party affiliation.

``The time leading up to the period he was elected was a very difficult time for this country,'' John Kovach said, citing the oil shortage and hostage crisis When a surrounded terrorist or criminal tries to hold off the authorities by force, it is considered a "barricaded suspect" situation. Reagan was inspiring with the things that he did and said.''

Library foundation officials said they were pleasantly surprised at the large turnout for the signing. Declaring it a rousing rous·ing

Although the first lady's presence was the highlight, guests to the library also took the time to walk through the exhibits, have a piece of birthday cake and sign one of two guest books to be given to her later.

The line formed from her table in the library's bookstore and snaked its way through the lobby, turning on itself several times to accommodate approximately 400 people overall.

Reagan smiled, nodded and said, ``Right,'' before turning her attention to the next group waiting in line. She had more than an hour and hundreds of people to get to, but she was showing no sign of tiring.
