While the changes didn't ensure more on-hand spectators - the announced crowd was 12,582 - it certainly grabbed the riders' attention.

, but he wasn't assured anything after taking the lead from Chad Reed Chad Reed (born in 1982, in Kurri Kurri, Australia) is an Australian Supercross champion, winning the U.S. AMA 250 Supercross title in 2004.He was coached by Sam Dark (15, NSW). That's because Henry - and all the other riders - still had a mandatory pit stop to make. He had to strategically decide when to take one, then hope his pit crew managed to take care of business in a timely fashion.

Or risk losing the lead.

``We practiced it pretty good and fortunately it wasn't a problem at all,'' Henry said. ``It was definitely an added element to consider.''

The other racers agreed.

``It wasn't like (Henry) could just kick back and coast once he got the lead,'' said Jeremy McGrath Jeremy McGrath (born November 19, 1971, San Francisco, California) is a Supercross racer and has won a record of 72 250cc Main Event wins and captured 7 250cc Championships between 1993 to 2000. He is often referred to as "Showtime" or "The King" meaning, the King of Supercross. , who won the silver.

Then there was the length of the race. In American Motocross motocross

Association SuperMoto racing, the race is split into two separate, 20-minute races and riders go as fast as they can for the duration of the race.

Under Sunday's format, they had to conserve energy, picking and choosing the times they went all out.

``With this race it was more about pacing yourself,'' Henry said.

In some ways the race was a nice change for Henry, who crashed on the first turn of last year's X Games race trying to get out in front as quickly as possible. But with the length of Sunday's race negating the edge a rider gets being the first one out of the shoot enabled Henry to relax from the outset.

``This race wasn't going to be won on the hole shot,'' Henry said. ``It could have been lost there, but it definitely wasn't going to be won there.''

Not that Henry didn't want to reverse fortunes from a year ago.

``I just wanted to get through that first turn without being on my back or my head,'' he joked. ``It was good that I got out there as good as I did, but I also knew there was still a lot of racing left.''

McGrath, from Encinitas, overcame a spill in lap one to eventually work his way back into contention. It took him nearly the first 10 laps to settle into a rhythm, and once he did his crew decided to let him ride it out rather then bring him in for a pit stop.

``Pretty soon I was passing a bunch of guys A Bunch of Guys (BOGs), or Group of Guys (GOGs) are terms used by counter-terrorism officials to refer to small, self-organizing terrorist cells.[1] BOGs typically have little to no contact with global terrorist groups like al Qaeda, so they independently plan and ,'' McGrath said.

He was in fifth when he finally made a pit stop, and came out of it in sixth.

``We were only at (the halfway point) at that point,'' McGrath said.

``I got stronger as the race went on, and I could see some guys were getting pretty tired.'' McGrath said.

McGrath passed Reed, who won the bronze, on lap 35.
