NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Craftsman Truck Series driver Ricky Hendrick says his team has one more win in it this season.

The top rookie and Truck Series championship contender already has one win this season, at Kansas Speedway. With five races remaining, he's sixth in points, 153 behind his Hendrick Motorsports teammate and series leader Jack Sprague.

The series heads to South Boston Speedway South Boston Speedway or "SoBo" is a race track located in South Boston, Virginia, U.S.A.. SoBo is located approximately sixty miles east of another area familiar to most NASCAR fans, Martinsville. It is owned by Dr. Joe Mattioli III, who also controls Pocono Raceway.  in Virginia for today's NetZero 250. But the tiny, 0.4-mile oval probably won't give Hendrick his second win of the season. He says the speedways of the West will be more to his liking.

``Texas for sure,'' Hendrick said when asked where he thinks his best chance for a win will come. ``The worst I've ever finished there, I think, is sixth. I should've won there when we raced earlier this year.''

Hendrick finished fifth in his first Truck Series appearance at Texas Motor Speedway Texas Motor Speedway is a superspeedway located in the northernmost portion of the U.S. city of Fort Worth, Texas -- the portion located in Denton County, Texas. The track layout is very similar to Atlanta Motor Speedway and Lowe's Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor  in June. Sprague won the race.

The Truck Series will be making its return to Texas on Oct. 5, a makeup date for the race that was canceled after the terrorist attacks in New York New York, state, United States

 and Washington, D.C.

But Hendrick, son of Rick Hendrick, owner of Jeff Gordon and Terry Labonte's Winston Cup teams, said there are a few race tracks out West where he thinks he can pull off another victory.

He likes Las Vegas, a track where his team had some encouraging tests earlier in the season.

``And California Speedway is another kind of track I love,'' he said.

The Truck Series will hold its season finale at the two-mile superspeedway in Fontana on Nov. 3.

--Newman on Kansas Speedway: The NASCAR Winston Cup Series will be making its first visit to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., this weekend, but rookie Ryan Newman might have a slight advantage.

The driver of the No. 02 Penske Racing Ford made a trip to the 1.5-mile tri-oval for an ARCA race in June.

Newman, who will be racing full-time on the Winston Cup circuit next season, has been racing in selected ARCA, Busch and Winston Cup races this year to gain experience for next year.

``It's a benefit to the schedule we've chosen,'' Newman said. ``I may be one, maybe two, steps ahead of everybody else. But on the other hand, I may be tricking myself by thinking that.''

This will be Newman's fifth Winston Cup start of the year and his first since the Brickyard 400 in August.

His best Winston Cup race came at the Kmart 400 at Michigan International Speedway Michigan International Speedway is a two-mile (3.22 km), moderate-banked, D shaped superspeedway located off U.S. Highway 12 on more than 1,400 acres [1] near Brooklyn, in the scenic Irish Hills area of southeastern Michigan.  in June. He started 12th and finished fifth. He also won the pole at Lowe's Motor Speedway Lowe's Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor Speedway) is a speedway in Concord, North Carolina, north of Charlotte. It features a 1.5 mile long quad-oval track that seats 167,000 people, with room for 50,000 more spectators in the infield.  for the Coca-Cola 600.

Winning poles has become Newman's forte on the Busch Series. In 13 races, he has won five, including last weekend at Dover Downs International Speedway in Delaware. He also has won poles at Atlanta, Chicago and Darlington twice.

``It's just you and the race track,'' Newman said. ``And you get to conquer the race track in two laps.''

--Broken seat belts: Winston Cup driver Jeremy Mayfield completed only 54 laps before ending his day last Sunday at Dover Downs in a crash that later revealed a broken seat belt in his car.

The broken belt was cause for concern for at least one driver, Ken Schrader, a 17-year veteran of Winston Cup racing.

``Obviously, it is very much a concern,'' said Schrader, driver of the No. 36 M&Ms Pontiac. ``I'll go back to the shop and look at the car and come to my own conclusions on how it happened.''

Mayfield's belt stirred memories of the accident that killed Dale Earnhardt in the season-opening Daytona 500. Schrader defended the Simpson equipment, seat belts and other safety restraints in his, Earnhardt's and Mayfield's car, and said he is far from considering replacing any of his safety equipment.

NASCAR announced Thursday that modifications will be made for seat belts and shoulder harnesses in its stock cars.

The modification from NASCAR states, ``the manufacturer's label on seat belts must not be located under the adjusting mechanism when the driver is buckled into the seat and has tightened the seat belts and shoulder harness.

``If the label is under the adjusting mechanism, the label must be removed or relocated in a manner that does not affect the integrity of the belt material.''

--Normally aspirated engines: In a move that might lead to CART reconsidering its turbo-charged engines, Toyota announced Thursday that beginning in 2003 it will produce only 3.5-liter, normally aspirated V-8 engines for open-wheel competition. The engines will be similar to the ones used by the Indy Racing League The Indy Racing League, better known as IRL, is the sanctioning body of a predominantly American based open-wheel racing series.

 specifications.

Toyota has been an engine supplier in the CART FedEx Series since 1996 with the current spec 2.65-liter, turbo-charged engine.

CART has spent more than a year discussing its future engine plans without reaching a decision to change its power plants of choice.
