The Antelope Valley
Hospital has hired a firm for $75,000 to assist in getting the facility licensed by the state.

``They are experts in licensing and start-ups of skilled nursing facilities,'' hospital director Gary Hill Gary Hill (born in 1951, Santa Monica, California, U.S.) is an American artist who lives and works in Seattle, Washington.

said. ``We are going to use their expertise to get this up and running in the most cost-effective manner.''

The hospital board at Wednesday's meeting voted 4-0 to approve the contract with Country Villa Health Services. Director Larry Chimbole left the meeting before the vote.

The hospital staff has no experience in doing the type of work that Country Villa will be doing, a process that will take four to five months, and it will be cheaper to use the firm rather than develop the expertise at the hospital, officials said.

``This is going through licensing procedures with the state. It's a specialized field. The firm is highly recognized in Southern California. They excel at this,'' Hill said.

After Country Villa has completed its work, the hospital will take over running the 78,000-square-foot facility, said Norm Andrews, senior vice president of operations.

The skilled nursing facility, which has experienced delays and cost overruns, is scheduled to be completed by the end of June or early July and will begin accepting patients three to four months after that, Andrews said.

When hospital officials broke ground for the project in October 1997, they said it would cost $11 million and be finished in less than a year.

The construction cost has since grown to more than $16 million. Including site improvements costs, the total price will come to $21 million, officials said.
