HELP'S ON THE WAY FOR HELPERS.Byline: Daily News SANTA CLARITA - The Supportive Services Department of the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center is partnering with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to help provide assistance to the growing number of caregivers. Caregiver Resource Day will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, 22900 Market St., Newhall. The free half-day symposium will focus on teaching new skills to help manage the stress, frustrations and guilt of caregiving, and how to establish control over their own lives, plan for the future and manage difficult behaviors by loved ones. After a complimentary continental breakfast, Joyce Welch of the Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center at the University of Southern California will present opening remarks. Featured speakers include attorney Gina G. MacDonald, who will be addressing the legal and financial issues of long-term care; Florence Omens omen, sign or augury believed to foreshadow the future. Almost any occurrence can be interpreted as an omen. The typical omen was a natural phenomenon, such as a meteor, an eclipse, or the flight of birds. Among the Greeks and Romans the interpretation of omens was a major part of religious life and required trained priests, such as the Roman augur, to explain the meaning of the signs. of the USC Home Modification Home Modification Alterations made to a home to meet the needs of people with physical limitations so they can live independently (to some degree) and safely. Examples of home modifications include removing throw rugs to prevent slips and falls, installing grab bars in the bathroom for stability and so on.Notes: Many minor home modifications and repairs can be done with as little as a few hundred dollars to as much as a few thousand. Project speaking on ways to make a living environment ``user friendly'' for the disabled; and Judith Harris, a marriage and family therapist, discussing how to maintain a sense of humor and optimism in the face of adversity. Throughout the morning, booths staffed by local caregiving organizations will provide information on the resources available within the community. On-site or in-home respite care Respite Care Short-term or temporary care of a few hours or weeks of the sick or disabled to provide relief, or respite, to the regular caregiver, usually a family member.Notes: A family member may be hesitant to seek or use respite care to leave a loved one in the care of another. However, there is evidence that caregivers who take a break from the associated stresses can help prevent incidents of neglect or abuse. will be provided at no charge on a limited basis.
