HEAVENLY HARMONICS ORGAN RECITAL TO BRING OUT MAJESTY, MUSIC OF WORSHIP.

Byline: Holly Andres Staff Writer

ENCINO - Just as the biblical star drew wise men and others to Bethlehem, the mosaic star on the tower of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church Episcopal Church, Anglican church of the United States. Its separate existence as an American ecclesiastical body with its own episcopate began in 1789. Doctrine and Organization
in Encino attracts the attention of motorists zooming along Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. It was also U.S. .

The Spanish mission-style building, with its representation of the star of Bethlehem Star of Bethlehem, in the Gospels
Star of Bethlehem, name given to the luminous celestial object rising in the sky that, as related in the Gospel of Matthew, led the Wise Men of the East to the manger in Bethlehem where Jesus was born.
, is set back from the busy thoroughfare. Flanked by an office building and the Encino Town Center, St. Nicholas is in an unlikely neighborhood, perhaps, for its faithful to find religion and the passion to celebrate God's words through artistic expression.

``Our slogan is 'classic faith for contemporary people.' The poetic and majestic side of worshipping God is emphasized here,'' the Rev. James Furman James B. Furman (January 23 1937(1937--) - 1989) was an African-American composer and college professor.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, at the age of six he began piano studies with his aunt, Permelia Hansbrough.

The Encino congregation originally assembled 1939 - in a horse barn belonging to character actor Edward Everett Horton Edward Everett Horton (March 18, 1886–September 29, 1970) was an American character actor with a long career including motion pictures, theater, radio, television and voice work for animated cartoons.

Horton was born in Brooklyn, New York to Isabella S.
, Furman said.

He and his congregation are inviting the community to celebrate both religious and musical traditions at a ``Solemn Evensong'' on Sunday.

``Evensong is simply an evening prayer that can be sung or spoken,'' said Philip Smith Philip Smith can mean:
  • Philip Smith (musician), American trumpeter
  • Philip Smith (VC), recipient of the Victoria Cross
  • Philip A. Smith, President of Providence College
  • Philip Smith (banker), Canadian investment banker
, the church's organist and director of music since 1997. ``Solemn means, well, that there's a certain solemnity SOLEMNITY. The formality established by law to render a contract, agreement, or other act valid.

of this special service is to show off the church's ``new-old'' pipe organ.

The church's organ has been enhanced significantly by the addition of a second pipe organ purchased from a church in Compton. The original organ that had four ranks of pipes now has 23 ranks, containing 61 pipes each, Smith said.

``The new organ will allow us two things. One is for us to have a richer music program at our 10 a.m. service. With the strengthened and fuller sound, we will be able to expand the musical enrichment programs we offer to the community, an idea that is important to us,'' Furman said.

``The music here is not like music performed for concertgoers,'' he continued. ``It's part of the praise and discovery of the mystery of God at our church. Music is not part of the decoration at St. Nicholas.''

The community will have a second chance to hear the renewed pipe organ on Sunday. Guest organist Timothy Howard, associate organist and choirmaster at All Saints Church All Saints Church, or All Saints' Church or variations on the name may refer to: Australia
  • All Saints Church, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory
  • All Saints Church, Henley Brook, Western Australia

in Pasadena, will perform a classical music recital later in the evening.

``I think almost any pipe organ is special these days, as opposed to the sound of an electronic organ, heard mostly today. This pipe organ has a lovely sound and is nicely scaled for the room it is in,'' said Howard, who plays a pipe organ of 83 ranks at All Saints Church.

The pipe organ is situated at the rear of the sanctuary, so when concertgoers sit in the pews they face the altar, not the music.

``For people not used to going to organ recitals, they might find it unusual. It will be an aural experience. The music becomes the most important thing. I've performed in other places, and what I hear is that people love the recitals and wish there were more of them,'' said Howard, who will play music composed by Bach, Saint-Saens and Herbert Howells Herbert Norman Howells CH (17 October, 1892 – 23 February, 1983) was an English composer, organist, and teacher. Life
Howells was born in Lydney, Gloucestershire, and was the youngest of six children born to Oliver and Elizabeth Howells.
.

Might a motorist or a shopper down the block become curious enough to follow St. Nicholas' star inside?

``I'll tell you a story that happened out of the blue a few months ago,'' Furman said. ``A young man wandered in off the street. After the service he told me he didn't have a religious conviction. But then he said, `I did learn that God wants to be my friend and is actually seeking to be my friend.'

``We don't close our door to anyone. We reach out to all.''
