of Highway 58 a reality, Caltrans will hold a public hearing Thursday to discuss an environmental impact report on property acquisitions.

The report for the right of way purchases is one of the last hurdles for the more than $75 million project that will take one of the two highways that runs through town to the east of the community. Construction of the Highway 58 bypass is expected to begin in early 2000.

``Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2002,'' said Frank Momen, the bypass project manager for the California Transportation Department.

At present, highways 58 and 14 join together through downtown Mojave.

At the north end of town, Highway 58 turns northwest toward Tehachapi and Bakersfield while Highway 14 veers northeast toward Lone Pine.

At the south end of town, Highway 58 goes east toward Barstow while Highway 14 runs south through the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Highway 14 will still go through downtown.

The public hearing on the draft report will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Mojave Veterans Building, 15580 O St.

The bypass is needed to improve the flow of traffic, particularly for east-west truck traffic, highway officials said.

Some 7,000 18-wheel rigs travel through Mojave in any given 24-hour period.

Plans for the bypass had raised fears of a major economic downturn Downturn

for the community, which derives much of its business from travelers. Some residents had called for a bypass to the west of the community, which they believed would still bring travelers into the community.

Caltrans had examined a west route, but it was dropped from consideration because of its cost - an estimated $120 million - and the fact it would disrupt existing and planned housing.

Mojave won't be affected the way other communities have when bypasses were built, such as the downturn that hit Boron boron (bōr`ŏn) [New Gr. from borax], chemical element; symbol B; at. no. 5; at. wt. 10.81; m.p. about 2,300°C;; sublimation point about 2,550°C;; sp. gr. 2.3 at 25°C;; valence +3. , said Kern Kern, river, 155 mi (249 km) long, rising in the S Sierra Nevada Mts., E Calif., and flowing south, then southwest to a reservoir in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin valley. ``Mojave is still the most logical stopping point for east-west traffic. The north-south traffic won't be affected,'' Perez said. ``This is going to provide relief from congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.
