HEARING SET ON BUS ROUTE CHANGES MORE NORTH-SOUTH LINES PROPOSED.

Byline: Lisa Mascaro Staff Writer

The MTA's San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
Governance Council will hold a public hearing today on bus route changes coming this summer as part of opening the new Orange Line busway.

Proposals call for doing away with key east-west routes across the Valley, while adding new bus service on north-south routes to connect with the Orange Line.

The council will vote on the changes March 23.

``I think we have an opportunity for a pretty good dialogue,'' said council chairman Coby King.

``What I'm really hoping to hear from the public is how they use the system, how they see these changes benefiting or harming them. I'm hoping we do get some good information, so when we do make our decisions on March 23 we'll have all the information we need.''

However, transit advocates complain that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's proposed cuts are too drastic.

They protest eliminating east-west express routes that carry up to 3,000 riders a day, and they are skeptical of new routes being proposed.

``We absolutely are opposed to the suggestions about removing the rush hour services from Roscoe and Topanga, and Sherman Way and Topanga,'' said Bart Reed, executive director of Sylmar-based The Transit Coalition.

``Our motto is fix it, don't destroy it.''
