We caught up with Willner, 49, at his home in New York. Q: How did you get so deeply into music? A: I loved it from when I was a kid. I saw the Beatles when I was 8 and my mom took me to see Cream at the Electric Factory when I was 12; those had a big effect. At 15, I was listening nonstop to this incredibly adventurous radio station out of Philadelphia that played the best of everything: jazz, underground rock, blues, folk, r&b. Music is the thing I always related to. I could never get enough of reading everything about it, buying the albums and studying the credits. I'm the same way today, but I get to make a living listening to music and thinking about it. Q: How did you get started in these kinds of conceptual projects? A: I just wanted to make records I wanted to hear, with no more planning than that. I always thought something might develop from it. The first one was the Rota thing (``Amarcord Nino Rota'') in 1981, where I only knew for sure I wanted to hear Carla Bley do something with ``8 1/2.'' A lot of the projects were small. I learned to be open to anything, but to always keep the framework in mind.
