HEAR TODAY DJ SPOOKY'S SKA AND REGGAE VISION.

Byline: Fred Shuster Music Writer

DJ Spooky doesn't do dance music.

The eclectic New York turntablist, remixer and producer instead creates engrossing engrossing, in English law, practice of acquiring a monopoly of goods in order to sell them at an inflated price. The offense was ordinarily limited to monopolies of foods. Related practices were forestalling, i.e.  musical ruminations using found tracks, urban noise and imaginative beats.

A writer with a degree in French literature and philosophy, and a published art critic, Spooky (born Paul Miller in 1970) works in music, video and text, using cutups and collages. He's made almost three-dozen albums, nicking his nickname, ``That Subliminal subliminal /sub·lim·i·nal/ (-lim´i-n'l) below the threshold of sensation or conscious awareness.

For his latest release, ``In Fine Style: 50,000 Volts of Trojan Records'' (Trojan/Sanctuary; $19.98), Spooky was given carte blanche to put together a two-disc, 34-track sampler from the vaults The introduction to this article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject matter.

of Trojan Records, the influential U.K. label that released a string of beloved ska and reggae records in the '60s and '70s.

The package features old-school gems by reggae legends Lee Perry, Sly and Robbie Sly and Robbie is one of reggae's most prolific and long lasting production teams. The rhythm section of drummer Lowell Dunbar (nicknamed Sly after Sly Stone, one of his favorite musicians) and bass guitarist Robert Shakespeare started working together in the mid 1970s, after , Peter Tosh and others. The Subliminal Kid was in a cab heading for New York's Tribeca district when we reached him.

Q: How is the Trojan anthology relevant today?

A: DJ culture in the 21st century is as much about the sound system as the playlist A file that contains an index to a selected group of music files on the computer. Using digital jukebox software such as iTunes and Winamp, playlists are created by the user by dragging and dropping titles from a master index. The software may be able to create a playlist automatically. . The iPod has brought us back to the era of the ``single'' in the form of downloadable media files. For me, this ``selection'' is a return to the era when I was a kid in the '80s, when vinyl still ruled the dancehalls, and the sound systems of NYC NYC

, Kingston, and London were all about underground flava.

Q: Without the innovations of Jamaican producers, hip-hop would probably sound very different now.

A: The idea of taking a track apart and rebuilding it with special effects came out of there. Tracks were built from scratch, and remixes were made from even older tracks, drum solos and dub bass lines. Hip-hop, electronica, house, techno -- dub influenced them all.

Q: You didn't do much to the original songs except link them together.

A: I feel reverence for the material. This was designed as a reminder of how great the music was. I was brought in as a ``selector,'' to choose and sequence the tracks based on my taste. The next project will look at how Jamaican dub technique influenced everybody.
