HEAR TODAY `WILD THING' GUY LEAVES WILD DAYS BEHIND.

Byline: Fred Shuster Music Writer

Chip Taylor is probably the only composer of a Troggs hit able to reel off anecdotes about placing bets with mob boss Meyer Lansky's bookies.

Taylor has had that kind of life. The composer of a freight train of hits, including ``Wild Thing,'' ``Angel of the Morning'' and (with Jerry Ragavoy) ``Try (Just a Little Bit Harder),'' kicked the music habit in the early '80s for a horse jones, becoming one of the foremost thoroughbred handicappers on the East Coast.

In the mid-'90s, Taylor -- born James Wesley Voight (brother to actor Jon Voight, which makes him Angelina Jolie's uncle), returned to music, cutting a string of albums, including three with singer-songwriter Carrie Rodriguez.

His new double-disc solo effort, ``Unglorious Hallelujah'' (Back Porch; $18.98), contains his take on the big and small moments of life, from the history of violence to his arrest for a booze-related car wreck.

Q: How long were you gambling professionally?

A: I was gambling in the '60s, but by the late '70s I was hooked and didn't want to tour. I needed to stay by the track in New York New York, state, United States

, 'cause that's what I was addicted to -- and I was good at it. Me and my partner made a lot of money. But when I decided to come back, I gave it up and replaced that need with the desire to play music with all my heart.

Q: So how'd you come up with ``Wild Thing''?

A: I was working up a demo one day and just started banging out these simple chords and stomping on the floor. I had a couple of lines but didn't know where it would go. That version sounded exactly like the Troggs, except mine was done with an old Kay acoustic guitar, and the Troggs used electrics.

Q: It's been covered a lot. What's your favorite version?

A: The Troggs because Reg Presley is one of the greatest early punk singers of all; Jimi Hendrix's, which was an amazing thing and true to the spirit and groove of the song; and X did one which could've been a hit if it was promoted as a single -- it was just a great version.
