HEALTHSPRING, INC., ANNOUNCES EXPANSION TO NEW MARKETS

RESTON, Va., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthSpring, Inc., a leading developer and manager of physician group practices which was originally incorporated as American Health Care Groups, Inc., today announced plans to open primary care health centers in two new metropolitan areas -- Dayton, Ohio, and Chicago. This month, the company opens the first of multiple health centers in the Philadelphia area as part of its relationship with Keystone Health Plan East, a jointly owned subsidiary of Independence Blue Cross and Pennsylvania Blue Shield.
In the Dayton area, HealthSpring has formed a strategic alliance with Western Ohio Health Care Corporation, a subsidiary of United HealthCare Corporation that currently serves approximately 200,000 HMO members. HealthSpring initially will build two local health centers, recruit physicians into group practices, employ all clinical and administrative support staff, and manage the group's business affairs. Western Ohio Health Care Corporation will enroll patients in HealthSpring Medical Groups as part of a new managed care product that the HMO will market to both current and prospective customers.
In the Chicago area, HealthSpring will develop one health center in Bloomingdale, Ill. The company is now forming relationships with HMOs in Chicago that will offer their members access to the services that HealthSpring Medical Groups will provide. The company will consider developing new health centers in other communities in the Chicago area.
James G. Carlson, president and chief executive officer of HealthSpring, Inc., said: "We believe that a well managed group practice is a better alternative to other, less structured physician organizations. As we develop our health centers, we are taking every step possible to create the kind of practice environment that encourages physicians, payers and patients to choose a HealthSpring Medical Group. Once patients join a HealthSpring Medical Group, we are confident that their expectations for better coordinated care, more convenience and lower costs will be met."
HealthSpring is a national managed care organization that develops and manages physician group practices in selected local markets. The company recruits primary care physicians in pediatrics, internal medicine, family practice, and obstetrics and gynecology and establishes referral relationships with sub-specialists and other health care providers in the communities in which it operates. The company's health centers serve health plans and their members principally through prepaid contracts.
