HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL RESPONDS TO MANAGED COMPETITION ACT OF 1993

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Pamela G. Bailey, president of the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC), issued the following statement in response to the Managed Competition Act of 1993:
The introduction today of the Managed Competition Act of 1993 by Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.) and 19 Republican and 27 Democratic members of the House is another step in the long national discussion on health care reform. It signals a milestone in the development of the broad, bipartisan consensus necessary to pass and implement effective reform.
The Healthcare Leadership Council welcomes this proposal and recognizes the perseverance of its chief sponsors. They have worked non-stop for the last two years to hammer out a consensus proposal which encompasses many points in the Clinton plan as well as important elements proposed by advocates of market-based reforms. Despite the changes and negotiations that will take place during this national discussion, the HLC believes this plan can serve as a significant benchmark against which future negotiations will be made.
The Healthcare Leadership Council is a group of some 50 health industry leaders that came together as a group five years ago because we realized a crisis was facing our health care system and that we, as leaders in the industry, had a responsibility to provide leadership toward reform. The members of the HLC are committed to continuing to compete to provide high-quality health care at the lowest possible cost, and we look forward to working closely with President Clinton, Mr. Cooper and his colleagues in fulfilling our mutual goal of giving the American people the health care reform they truly deserve.
