HEALTH SYSTEMS GROUP RECEIVES AWARD FROM U.S. POSTAL SERVICE
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Systems Group, a unit of American Express Information Services Corporation, has been awarded the U.S. Postal Service's Automation Seal of Approval. The Charlotte Mail Sectional Center (MSC) cited Health Systems Group for barcoding improvements in its mailing operations, which have resulted in faster processing for the Postal Service and financial savings for Health Systems Group clients.
The Charlotte MSC is the first in the nation to present the Automation Seal of Approval, making Health Systems Group the first recipient in the U.S.
The award presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 18, during a meeting of the Charlotte Postal Customer Council at Health Systems Group's corporate headquarters in University Research Park.
"The success of our Automation Program depends on mail that is readable on our automated equipment," said Sherry Conner, Acting MSC Director-Marketing and Communications. "The Charlotte MSC has embarked upon many innovative ideas to promote the participation of our customers to improve the readability of our mail base. The Seal of Approval was designed to enhance the partnership between the United States Postal Service and our business customers, whose volumes impact the readability success of our automated equipment. American Express Health Systems Group, I am proud to announce, is the first customer in our area to accept the challenge and achieve this recognition."
Approximately 240 hospitals outsource their billing to Health Systems Group, making the company a major customer of the Charlotte General Mail Facility (GMF). Health Systems Group mails 18 million statements per year -- in addition to the substantial volume of mail generated by its 1,100 employees. In January of this year, the company began work on a major upgrade to its billing operations, replacing carbon-impact statement forms with laser-printed, barcoded statements. In 10 of 12 tests conducted at the Charlotte GMF, the new statements produced readability of 99 percent or better -- and earned the award for Health Systems Group.
The new statements offer advantages for both the Postal Service and Health Systems Group clients. The Postal Service benefits from the faster processing provided by barcoding, and in turn gives Health Systems Group lower rates on postage -- a savings of $504,000 per year, all of which is passed on to clients. The company's client hospitals derive other benefits as well: not only are the new laser-printed statements easier for patients to read, they also supply more detail than the old carbon-impact statements. Moreover, the barcoded envelopes used for both statements and payments reduce mailing time by two days -- an important consideration for hospitals seeking to expedite the receivables cycle.
Health Systems Group is a unit of American Express Information Services Corporation (ISC), a leading provider of high-quality information processing and communications services to the following industries: banking, payment products, mutual funds, healthcare, telecommunications and cable television. ISC is a wholly-owned operating unit of American Express Company.
