HEALTH MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATES, INC. REPORTS 47 PERCENT INCREASE IN NET EARNINGS FROM OPERATIONS FOR THE FIRST QUARTER ENDED DEC. 31, 1992

 NAPLES, Fla., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- William J. Schoen, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Health Management Associates, Inc. (NYSE: HMA) announced today that net earnings from operations increased 47 percent in the first quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992 to $5,081,000 from $3,467,000 in the comparable quarter a year ago. Net earnings per share from operations increased to $.27 on 19,063,000 shares as compared to $.19 on 18,036,000 shares for the same quarter a year ago. This represents a 42 percent increase in per share earnings after a 6 percent increase in the number of shares outstanding. Net revenues increased during the quarter to $73,212,000 from $64,869,000 for the same quarter a year ago.
 In commenting on the company's first quarter results, Mr. Schoen said, "The company's success continues to result from the delivery of expanded and improved services, and our strategic acquisition program. The company in its first quarter continued to experience gains in admissions and outpatient and inpatient surgeries."
 Health Management Associates is a major operator of general acute care hospitals in communities situated primarily in the southeast and southwest. The company operates sixteen facilities in ten states with a total of 1,658 licensed beds.
