HE SAID, SHE SAID.

Byline: Jill Painter

HIS TAKE

Joe Buttitta

Westlake pro

It's all carry with out of bounds left and behind the hole and a nasty bunker in front. Nasty hole but fun. It's a virtual island green. If you don't hit it on, you're out of bounds or in trouble. It's like dropping a parachute right over the green. The club selection is critical here.

Buttitta's hole: Buttitta hit a 9-iron on the green about 15 feet below the hole and it spun back about another 20 feet. He had a 35-foot putt for birdie. He left that three feet below the hole and made the putt for par.

HER TAKE

JILL PAINTER

No matter what I did off the tee, I knew it wouldn't be as bad as a guy who played here about five years ago. He shanked shank

I hit a 9-iron over the green. It didn't go past the cart path, beyond the hole, which is out of bounds. But I was in trouble. I had a shot in deep grass with a hill in front and tree branches three feet about the ground. At Buttitta's suggestion, I used a 7-iron and even though I topped the ball, I got it on the green past the hole and two-putted from there. Not a bad bogey.

For those who believe in mulligans, keep reading. I played another two balls off the tee, dribbling one shot into the water and I put the other on the green about 12 feet from the hole. I had a birdie putt and missed it. I even pushed the four-footer to the left of the hole and had to settle for bogey.

. But in the offseason, he plays golf as much as he can. Mihm didn't pick up the sport until his days at the University of Texas. He plays most of his golf while visiting friends and faily in Austin, Texas.

Mihm spent his youth playing basketball, tennis and swimming. As a 14-year-old, he was one of the best juniors in Texas. Mihm won't play as much golf this summer because he's scheduled to have ankle surgery today.

DAILY NEWS: Why did you start playing golf?

CHRIS MIHM: A couple of (college) teammates took me out to the course.

I had a couple of family friends who always wanted me to play. I started going more and more with them. Playing basketball is indoors through the fall and winter and spring. Come summer, I love being outdoors. Golf is more relaxing for me. I get to take my mind off everything.

DN: Were you a natural?

CM: I think I was pretty good. I'm 7 feet tall, so I'm working with some disadvantages in my swing plane. There's more room for error with my arm length and height. I've always had pretty good hand-eye coordination hand-eye coordination Eye-hand coordination Surgery Oculomanual synchronization, required by surgeons, especially for laparoscopic surgery. See Laparoscopic surgery, Paradoxical movement. .

DN: How do you find clubs that fit?

CM: Even when I started playing, I picked up a set of clubs from Golfsmith but I didn't really understand the concept of getting fitted correctly. That was one of the first big steps, to go in and have a professional fitting. I got a great set of Titleist golf clubs that feel good. This summer, I'm looking to switch and try something different.

DN: What are the differences between California courses and Texas courses?

CM: The heat. I enjoy the temperature a lot more out there. Texas is a lot tougher to play 18 holes in 95-degree heat. It brings out a more mental aspect when you're on the course that long. They keep courses really nice back home. The grass is nice.

There's probably a lot more canyon-type courses, which are gorgeous, in Austin.

DN: What's the most reliable club in your bag?

CM: I love my irons. I'm most confident with my 7-iron. I love using it for mid- to long-range shots. It seems to be the one club in my bag I feel I can hit close to perfect every time I hit it.

DN: How did you get to be such a good putter?

CM: When I grew up, one of the things I always did was play Putt-Putt (miniature) golf. That's where my putting prowess came from. Putting is probably the strongest part of my game and my short game is what needs the most work. I've hit the ball -- it's gotta be -- in the high 200s and probably over 300 (yards). Distance isn't my problem. I can hit the hell out of the ball.

DN: Who would be in your dream foursome?

CM: I'd love to play with some of the past professional golfers and learn a little from them and get some tips and see the other side of golf. I always enjoy talking to Noun 1. talking to - a lengthy rebuke; "a good lecture was my father's idea of discipline"; "the teacher gave him a talking to"

DN: What's your most embarrassing moment on the golf course?

CM: I played in a charity tournament (in Cleveland) where the TV cameras were on me and I absolutely shanked the ball out of play and almost into a catering tent. That was my closest brush with disaster in golf. Thankfully, they just showed my tee box shot and not where the ball went.

DN: What's your best memory on a golf course?

CM: I shot an 80 in a charity tournament at Barton Creek Barton Creek is one of the tributaries that feeds the Texas Colorado River from the Texas Hill Country.
