Brian Edick was surprised by how calm he was Sunday as he stood over a 12-foot birdie putt on Tijeras Creek Golf Club's 18th green with a chance to win the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Golf Association Amateur Championship.

The former Hart High of Newhall standout's ball rolled into the center of the cup, but he had to watch 2000 champion Scott McGihon, playing a group behind, walk away with the trophy.

Edick finished second, a stroke behind McGihon, but his performance showed that the 2001 Daily News Player of the Year is back on track after a collegiate career that's featured three schools in three years, a season away from golf and doubts about returning to competition.

Sunday earned him a spot in the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship on Aug. 2-5 at Bandon Dunes Resort in Bandon, Ore.

``I've made a lot of strides this year,'' Edick said. ``I owe a lot of it to just being at (UC) Irvine. When you're in a place where you're happy to be, you'll always play better.''

Edick earned All-Big West second-team honors and had four top-10 finishes at UC Irvine last season. He was second on the team with a 74.11 scoring average.

Edick struggled his freshman season at University of the Pacific, finishing in the top 20 once in 10 tournaments. Golf became less enjoyable as the season wore on, he said. He left Pacific after the season and attended College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  the next year before transferring to UC Irvine.

``The motivation (to play well) is gone if you're not happy,'' said former Westlake High standout Doug Miller. ``You can't play to your potential.''

Miller spent his freshman season at Texas-Arlington but transferred to Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  after one year. Miller was an All-Big West honorable mention selection at Cal State Northridge last season.

Edick considered not returning to college competition the year he was at Canyons, although he did continue playing the game, mostly entering city championships.

``I think the year (at Canyons) showed him what golf brought to his life,'' said Aaron Fuller, Edick's high school coach. ``He needed to get away from (college golf) to show himself how good he was and how important golf was to him.''

Edick said he enjoys life on and off the golf course at UC Irvine, where he is a Big West Scholar-Athlete.

``His expectations are through the roof in everything he does, whether it's school or golf,'' said Edick's instructor, Les Johnson. ``Now that his life is more balanced, he can still have those huge expectations, but he also has a lot better perspective on what life is about. It takes pressure off him on the golf course.''
