HE'S HAVING SOME SUMMER; GORE WINS 2 MAJOR TOURNEYS; NAMED TO WALKER CUP TEAM.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

These days of summer have been anything but lazy for Valencia's Jason Gore Jason William Gore (born May 17, 1974) is an American professional golfer.

Gore was born in Van Nuys, California. He attended Pepperdine University. Gore plays on the PGA Tour after moving from the Nationwide Tour midseason in 2005.

Who else can pack in a summer of winning the California amateur and state championships, earning a berth on the U.S. Walker Cup team while still finding time to shake hands to perform the customary act of civility by clasping and moving hands, as an expression of greeting, farewell, good will, agreement, etc.

Only in a summer like Gore has had, when his gallery this weekend at the SCGA SCGA Southern California Golf Association

Gore's meeting on the 15th tee with Bush - playing on an adjacent fairway flanked by Secret Service agents - came one day after learning he was chosen to the Walker Cup team, which was named after Bush's grandfather, George Herbert Walker George Herbert "Bert" Walker (June 11, 1875 - June 24, 1953) was a wealthy American banker and businessman. His daughter Dorothy married Prescott Bush, making him the grandfather (and namesake) of President George H. W. Bush and the great-grandfather of current President George W. .

And the summer just gets better and better.

``It's been awesome,'' said Gore, who birdied the final two holes Sunday but finished second at the SCGA, snapping his streak of three consecutive tournament victories. ``It's been pretty amazing. Not one I'll forget very soon.''

And why should he? Gore, 23, became only the second golfer in 55 years to win both the California Amateur and California Open the same year. He won the Amateur at Pebble Beach, beating Walnut Creek's Scott Watson after being 2-down after the first 18 holes. In the Open, he became the first amateur winner since 1973, shooting a blazing 8-under 64 at Indian Wells Indian Wells may refer to:

  • Indian Wells Masters, a tennis tournament held in Indian Wells, California
to erase a six-stroke deficit entering the final day - again showing his penchant for the dramatic, come-from-behind variety of victory.

He almost did it again this weekend at Lakeside, his new home course. In Sunday's final round, he was behind eventual winner Craig Steinberg by three strokes following a bogey at 15. After sinking a par-saving 10-foot putt on 16, he holed a 20-yard chip from the fringe to birdie 17 and go 2-under. On 18, with Steinberg in the clubhouse at 4-under, Gore hit a 320-yard drive, then went for the hole from 91 yards. His wedge shot stuck eight feet from the pin, ending the drama but securing second place.

``Can you shoot 68 and lose?'' Gore joked afterward. ``What's up with that?''

Answered his father, Sheldon: ``Hey, you Hey, You is the debut EP of Japanese band Mono. Track listing

can't win every time. Nobody would want to play anymore.'' The Gores joke a lot these days.

Curiously, his summer began on a down note, one that has both haunted and helped the former Hart High School Hart High School may refer to:

team golf championship, Gore was losing the individual one, double-bogeying the final hole after leading by a stroke on the tee.

``I can't tell you how many times I've watched that tape,'' Gore said on Sunday. ``I see that 7-iron going into the bunker. I remember what I was feeling when it happened.

``But I think I learned a lot from it. Like today, when instead of finishing with a bogey I finished with two birdies.''

His Pepperdine coach, John Geiberger, agreed that the NCAA experience was a good one, even though it hurt.

``I think his quotes and comments afterward were true, that he was more involved in the team championship than the individual,'' he said. ``But he asked me later what it cost him. I think he wanted to prove that he wasn't going to disappear.''

Obviously, he hasn't. He didn't go away when he left Arizona after two consecutive Pac-10 championships, though sometimes he wished he could.

``It wasn't his kind of town and he missed his family. He was playing well, but he wasn't happy,'' said his father, who took Jason to a golf course for the first time at age 12 (``He took to it like a duck to water.'').

So, he came to Pepperdine, even sitting out a year to regain his eligibility. He quickly shined, and so did the Waves. The NCAA title this spring was the program's first.

He made another correct call this summer. He was talked out of turning pro after winning at Pebble Beach, deciding a Walker Cup berth was more important. Finally, after an often agonizing wait, he heard Friday he was awarded one of the final two spots.

``It was definitely a relief,'' Gore said. ``It was more like, `Wow.' I can't even put it into words. It was a lot easier to play this weekend after I found out.''

Gore will play in the Pacific Coast Amateur in Hawaii, arriving on Sunday before taking some time off before Walker Cup play in August. Then it's school - he needs three more classes at Pepperdine to finish a psychology degree - followed by more school, when PGA (1) (Professional Graphics Adapter) An early IBM PC display standard for 3D processing with 640x480x256 resolution. ``I've played so much golf, but it's still fun for me,'' Gore said. ``It's just exciting . . . you tee it up and you never know what's going to come about.''
