HDS Introduces Industry's Highest-Performance, Fault Tolerant Automated Tape Libraries.

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 7, 1995--Hitachi Data Systems (HDS (Hitachi Data Systems, Santa Clara, CA, www.hds.com) A leading provider of high-end storage hardware, software and services. Part of the Information Systems & Telecommunications Division of Hitachi Ltd. ) Tuesday introduced its Media Manager Series, a set of high-performance, fault tolerant The ability to continue non-stop when a hardware failure occurs. A fault-tolerant system is designed from the ground up for reliability by building multiples of all critical components, such as CPUs, memories, disks and power supplies into the same computer. , system-managed library products. The 7430 Media Manager and the higher-capacity 7450 Media Manager are the first two models in the series.

The products are fully compatible with industry-standard software, and are designed to facilitate the rapid mounting, demounting, and storing of magnetic tape media.

"While these new products provide value-added features and functions delivering high levels of flexibility, performance, and availability they are merely part of a broader focus," said Gary Holtwick, Vice President of Storage Systems Marketing.

"Our strategy is not simply to automate existing inefficiencies. Instead, we're focused on media optimization, helping our customers get the most out of the equipment they already have. In some cases they may need services; in others, they may need automation. Regardless of the requirement, we can help with our Tape Optimization Service, our tape products, or our new Media Managers," Holtwick said.

Available as a professional services (job) professional services - A department of a supplier providing consultancy and programming manpower for the supplier's products.  option, Technical Assistance Program/Tape Optimization Service (TAP/TOS) analyzes tape use, provides recommendations for improving the efficiency of tape operations, and provides multiple implementation options.

In addition to supporting the HDS Cartridge Tape Subsystem Series of the 7400 Tape Product Family, the Media Manager Series complements the other products in the HDS Pathfinder Family of storage products, including the Scalable Storage Server Series, the 7900 Semiconductor Disk, and the 7600 Disk Storage Subsystem The part of a computer system that provides the storage. It includes the controller and disk drives. See storage system. .

7450 Media Manager: High Performance, High Availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.

The 7450 Media Manager meets the capacity requirements of the large enterprise environment. The seven 7450 models provide a capacity ranging from 2,103 to 8,751 cartridges, in increments of approximately 1,100 between models. It will support as many as eight control units, and 32 7490, 7490E, or 7491E tape transports.

Dual robot accessors permit the 7450 to perform in excess of 400 cartridge exchanges per hour, giving the 7450 the highest performance of any robotic system robotic system An integrated system of devices that automate production and manufacturing of goods and services Surgery An AI-based surgical assistant system, which processes sensory input from haptic interfaces and/or allows surgeons to act with more accuracy than  available today. The 7450 addresses fault-tolerance concerns through duplication of every critical component, including the robots. Maintenance and repair may be done concurrent with 7450 system operation, ensuring continuous data access.

7430 Media Manager: Entry Level ATL (Active Template Library) A set of software routines from Microsoft that provide the basic framework for creating ActiveX and COM objects. Stemming from the standard template library (STL) that comes with C++ compilers, ATL includes an object wizard that sets up

The 7430 Media Manager is an entry-level, small- to medium- capacity library. The seven 7430 models provide a capacity ranging from 316 to 3,016 cartridges, in increments of approximately 400 cartridges between models. The 7430 will support as many as four 7492E tape subsystems (equivalent to eight transports), depending on the model.

time of less than 10 seconds resulting in as many as 200 cartridge exchanges per hour. The compact design of the 7430 has a footprint of only 1.1 to 6.3 square meters and requires no rear service clearance.

To further ensure high availability within the Media Manager Series, HDS offers Hi-Track, a computer-based predictive maintenance system that identifies, analyzes, and monitors potential problems before they occur.

Pricing and Availability

The 7450 will be generally available 3Q95 in all markets served by HDS, with restricted availability in Europe; the 7430 will be available in all markets 4Q95. Pricing for the 7430 and 7450 starts at 90,000 and 275,000 USD USD
