HBO OLE PACTS WITH GENERAL INSTRUMENT FOR DIGICIPHER SYSTEM

 CARACAS, Venezuela, and SAN DIEGO, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move that will advance its goal of ensuring future growth through state-of- the-art satellite transmission technology, HBO Ole has entered into an agreement with General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) to convert HBO Ole's current analog transmissions to the digital compression format using GI's DigiCipher(R) I system. the announcement was made jointly today by Jose Manuel Pagani, executive vice president and general manager, HBO Ole, and Hal M. Krisbergh, president, GI's Broadband Communications Division.
 The conversion, expected to be completed by the end of this year, will allow Latin American pay-TV programmer HBO Ole to pave the path for the distribution of an array of new channels via digital compression. In addition, the move to the DigiCipher system aligns HBO Ole with other major programmers in the region who have also opted for GI's digital compression technology. HBO Ole plans to upgrade to MPEG II-compatible DigiCipher II, considered to be the next industry-standard system, as soon as it is made available.
 In making the announcement, HBO Ole's Pagani noted the profound impact that this state-of-the-art compression technology will have on Latin America's satellite television industry. "Adopting this advanced technology will not only reinforce HBO Ole's position as one of the dominant players in the rapidly growing arena of satellite television programmers in the region, but will also provide our affiliates with capabilities that will help to ensure dynamic future growth," he said. "It is important the HBO Ole be able to offer our affiliates what we believe to be the best technology available."
 Commenting on the agreement, GI's Krisbergh stated: "We are very pleased that HBO Ole has become one of the many leading communication and entertainment companies in Latin America to select the DigiCipher system. GI's technology provides the kind of signal security and compression capabilities which can offer programmers many options for their future growth."
 Launched in October 1991, HBO Ole is a joint venture of Home Box Office, a division of Time Warner Entertainment Company, L.P., and Omnivision Latinamerican Entertainment Inc., a Venezuelan pay-TV company. HBO Ole was the first 24-hour-a-day, commercial-free, Spanish- language premium entertainment network in Latin America.
