HAZARDOUS WASTE ROUNDUP SET FOR EAST VENTURA COUNTY.

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - In an effort to discourage illegal dumping, Simi Valley has scheduled a household hazardous waste Household hazardous waste (HHW) is the term for common household chemicals and substances for which the owner no longer has a use. Exhibiting many of the same dangerous characteristics as fully regulated hazardous waste, HHW is not regulated by the EPA.  roundup to provide east Ventura County residents with safe disposal of toxic items like motor oil and pesticides.

The June 1 roundup is free and open to residents of Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks and the adjacent unincorporated areas of Ventura County, who must call (805) 583-6321 to make an appointment.

Items that can be disposed of during the roundup include paints, antifreeze antifreeze, substance added to a solvent to lower its freezing point. The solution formed is called an antifreeze mixture. Antifreeze is typically added to water in the cooling system of an internal-combustion engine so that it may be cooled below the freezing point , motor oil and filters, batteries, household cleaners, pool chemicals and weed killers.

Also accepted will be insecticides, fertilizers, photographic chemicals, and auto and furniture polishes.

Janet Murphy, president of the Ventura County Environmental Coalition's Moorpark branch, urged residents to clean their garages and participate in the roundup.
