HAYES WHEELS INTERNATIONAL TO INVEST UP TO $35 MILLION IN R&D, MANUFACTURING

DETROIT, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hayes Wheels International will invest about $30 million to $35 million in research and development, product engineering and manufacturing this year, according to Ron Cucuz, president and chief executive officer. More than $20 million will be invested in a cast aluminum wheels production facility in the southeastern United States, he announced at the Society of Automotive Engineers International Congress & Exposition in Detroit today.
According to Cucuz, the new 185,000-square-foot facility will begin production of cast aluminum wheels for 1994 model year vehicles this summer. At startup, the facility will employ between 50 and 100 workers. At full capacity, the plant will employ up to 250.
"We've established the new facility in response to our growing customer base in North America, Europe and Asia," Cucuz said. "The added capacity from the new plant will enable Hayes Wheels to meet the needs of its international customers more effectively than ever before."
Hayes Wheels is the leading independent producer of steel wheels for the North American market, the largest independent North American exporter of aluminum wheels to Japan and the second-largest producer of aluminum wheels in North America.
Hayes Wheels International is the world leader in the design, engineering and manufacture of steel and aluminum wheels for the automotive market in North America, Europe and Asia. Hayes Wheels is a member of the Kelsey-Hayes Group of Companies.
