HAYES WHEELS INTERNATIONAL MAKES ASIAN DEBUT AT TOKYO MOTOR SHOW

TOKYO, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Hayes Wheels International, Inc. (NYSE: HAY) made its formal Asian market debut at the Tokyo Motor Show today. Formed by the initial public offering of the Kelsey-Hayes Group's wheels businesses in December 1992, Hayes Wheels is a world leader in the design, manufacture and production of steel and aluminum wheels for the global automotive community.
"By combining the successful wheel operations of Kelsey-Hayes into one unified company, we have created a formidable contender in the global marketplace," said John Utley, chairman. "Today, we are a market leader in North America, Asia and Europe."
 HAYES WHEELS IN JAPAN
In Japan, Hayes Wheels markets its Western Wheel brand of cast aluminum wheels through its Japanese joint venture company, Nippon Western Pacific Corporation. Through the sales and marketing efforts of Nippon Western Pacific, Hayes Wheels has become North America's leading independent exporter of aluminum wheels to Japan.
Nippon Western Pacific was formed in 1987 as a joint venture between Nippon Light Metal of Japan and Western Wheel Corporation, a business of Hayes Wheels. Nippon Western Pacific is responsible for marketing the company's steel and aluminum wheels to automobile manufacturers in Japan and other Asian countries.
Today, Hayes Wheels products are offered on a wide range of automotive platforms for companies like Nissan, Honda, Mazda and Isuzu.
HAYES WHEELS AND THE GLOBAL MARKET
In addition to its Nippon Western Pacific venture in Japan, Hayes Wheels operates more than a dozen facilities in North America, Eastern and Western Europe, Mexico and South America. In Europe, the company markets cast aluminum wheels through its FPS subsidiary based in Italy -- and fabricated steel and aluminum wheels from its soon to be completed joint venture with Nova hut a.s. Ostrava in the Czech Republic.
Hayes Wheels International is a leading producer of steel and aluminum wheels in North America and its FPS subsidiary is the leading producer of aluminum wheels in Europe. The company employs 2,600 workers worldwide and posts annual sales of more than $400 million.
"Our global capabilities can be illustrated in a new contract that we have signed with Nissan," Utley said. "We will begin exporting cast aluminum wheels to Nissan for the 1995 model year Sentra in November. Then, beginning in the summer of 1994, we will also ship cast aluminum wheels to Nissan's Smyrna, Tenn., plant for production of the Sentra there. We're proud to be a supplier to Nissan -- not only in North America, but in Asia as well. It further strengthens our growing presence as a worldwide supplier."
