HAYES AND ROCKWELL REACH AGREEMENT ON SUPPORT
 FOR INDUSTRY STANDARD ESCAPE SEQUENCE
ATLANTA, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc., the global leader in the personal computer communications market, and Rockwell International Corp. (NYSE: ROK), the world's largest modem semiconductor manufacturer, today announced a licensing agreement permitting Rockwell to incorporate the Hayes Escape Sequence With Guard Time Patent, also known as the Heatherington '302 Patent, into its modem chip sets.
Under the agreement, Rockwell has taken a license that will benefit its modem chip set customers worldwide. This agreement addresses both past and future obligations of those customers to Hayes under the Hayes '302 Patent.
The Hayes escape sequence technology, first introduced in Hayes Smartmodem products in 1981 and issued as U.S. Patent Number 4,549,302 on 25 October 1985, is now a data communications feature acknowledged as an industry standard for modems, ISDN and other data communications applications, with over 26 million units shipped to date worldwide. Hayes holds corresponding patents to the Hayes '302 Patent in Canada (No. 1,186,080), France (No. E0067395), Germany (No. P3279750.8-08), Italy (No. 21810BE/89), and the United Kingdom (No. GB0067395), including registration of the United Kingdom patent in Hong Kong.
According to Dwight Decker, Vice President and Business Director of Rockwell's Modem Systems, and Dennis Hayes, President of Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc., the Hayes/Rockwell agreement permits modem makers who purchase modem chip sets from Rockwell to implement the Hayes patented Escape Sequence With Guard Time and avoid concerns over installed-base incompatibilities and unsatisfactory performance results caused by alternative escape mechanisms.
"When a major corporation like Rockwell comes to the table and obtains the use of this patent, it further confirms the importance of this technology to the industry," said Dennis C. Hayes. "By licensing Rockwell, Hayes makes it easy for all modem manufacturers to use this standard technology."
"This is not simply an intellectual property rights matter," said Decker. "Rather it's an acknowledgment of industry standards and practices, and Rockwell's support for such standards. Our business charter is to enable our customers to build the very best products, and this agreement is just another step toward that goal."
Best known as the leader in microcomputer modems, Hayes develops, supplies and supports computer communications equipment and software for personal computer and computer communications networks. The company distributes its products in over 60 countries through a global network of authorized distributors, dealers, VARs, systems integrators and original equipment manufacturers.
A leader in modem technology for more that 30 years and a major supplier to computer and data communications OEMs worldwide, Rockwell International's Digital Communications Division is headquartered in Newport Beach, Calif.
Rockwell International is a multi-industry company applying advanced technology to a wide range of products in electronics, aerospace, automotive and graphics businesses.
