Byline: Stacy Finz Daily News Staff Writer

State Sen. Tom Hayden Thomas Emmett "Tom" Hayden (born December 11, 1939) is an American social and political activist and politician, most famous for his involvement in the anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960s. , who got his start in politics as a 1960s radical, is running for mayor of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , a spokeswoman announced Saturday night.

The Democratic legislator will take on four-year incumbent Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  in the April 8 election.

``I am running for mayor because Richard Riordan wants to make Los Angeles the biggest city in America, and I want it to be the most livable,'' Hayden said in a press release.

The announcement came as no surprise to political insiders. Hayden, who represents parts of West Los Angeles

and Santa Monica, is scheduled to formally announce his candidacy today at 1:30 p.m. at his campaign headquarters.

``There is no doubt that Hayden has taken a lot of interest in local issues,'' said Joe Cerrell, a veteran political consultant. ``He's very articulate, very controversial and very outspoken. He will probably be a very aggressive opponent to the mayor.''

Riordan could not be reached for comment.

Hayden is the first major candidate to get into the race. However, political pundits speculate that City Councilman Nate Holden, who represents the 10th District, will also jump into the field.

Hayden has criticized Riordan and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for its lagging subway project. And unlike Riordan, he has taken a position on the reappointment reappointment Hospital practice The renewal of medical staff membership and privileges of a practitioner whose previous service on the medical staff has met the staff's standard of Pt care. ``Cities are becoming much more relevant to what's happening in people's daily life,'' said Patti Shin, Hayden's chief of staff, on the senator's decision to leave state politics if elected mayor. ``He feels he can be more effective as mayor than acting as a watchdog in Sacramento.''

But Cerrell said he didn't think Hayden, D-Los Angeles, could match the millionaire mayor's campaign coffers. In addition Riordan, a Republican, has maintained a high level of popularity in the city, according to Cerrell.

Hayden, who will turn 57 this month, gained his reputation as a radical at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. There he was arrested for organizing Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam.  protests.
