HAVING PLANE MANUFACTURING SITE IN SOUTHLAND WON'T HURT.

Byline: Gregory J. Wilcox Daily News Staff Writer

The good news about Boeing Co.'s decision to move some 737 jetliner production to Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  is it will be good for the region's image to have an airline manufacturing facility.

The bad news is as many as 5,000 layoffs are still planned as the Seattle-based aerospace company halts production on three other lines of jetliners.

Nevertheless, the region's economy is now robust enough to absorb this type of hit with less damage than would have been wrought in the early 1990s when the aerospace industry went through a major retrenching.

``It's not going to be pleasant because these are high income jobs. But we are better able to handle it,'' said Jack Kyser, chief economist The Chief Economist is a single position job class having primary responsibility for the development, coordination, and production of economic and financial analysis. It is distinguished from the other economist positions by the broader scope of responsibility encompassing the  for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp.

Softening any future layoffs is the fact that the Los Angeles-Long Beach region last year supplanted Chicago as the nation's top manufacturing center. The county had been home to the most manufacturing jobs from the 1980s into the early '90s. Chicago took over the top spot in 1994 as a result of the aerospace industry downsizing (1) Converting mainframe and mini-based systems to client/server LANs.

(2) To reduce equipment and associated costs by switching to a less-expensive system.

Boeing's decision to keep 600 jobs and a manufacturing line open in Long Beach ``is very symbolic because most people feel we don't make airplanes here any more, that aerospace went away,'' Kyser said.

Boeing plans to add jobs in other local units as well.

``We are still in the hiring mode here and things are booming,'' said company spokesman Dan Beck. ``We feel that commercialization of space Commercialization of space is the use of outer space for the purpose of generating a profit, either by a corporation or state.
