HAVING FUN WITH THE FORMAT RIO MESA HOSTS UNIQUE SPARTAN RELAYS ON SATURDAY.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

The Spartan Relays will have plenty of talent with standouts such as Porchea Carroll of Rio Mesa High, Laura Jakosky of Agoura, Chadd Smith of Camarillo and Will Svitek Will Svitek (born January 8, 1982 in Prague, Czech Republic) is an American football player who currently plays tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs. He played in 38 games (18 starts) at Stanford University. He recorded 60 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.  of Newbury Park.

But the emphasis will be on teams at the 14th annual meet at Rio Mesa High.

The meet is comprised entirely of relays, including standard events such as the 400- and 1,600-meter relays, the occasionally contested distance medley, sprint medley and shuttle hurdles and the uncommon 8 x 200 meters.

The 4 x 1,600 will be scored similar to a cross country meet. All runners will compete at once without a baton, with the times from the four runners from each school added to determine the overall winner.

Even the field events will be contested as relays, with the marks of the top three athletes combined for a cumulative total.

Carroll will run in the 400 relay, 1,600 relay and long jump. The low- key meet should be a welcome relief for the junior who has won the 100 in three competitive invitationals during the past month, including a victory in a state-leading 11.60 in the Mt. Jakosky is coming off a breakthrough race in the 3,200 meters in 10:54.14, where the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Svitek, the defending Southern Section Division II shot put champion, turned in a solid weight double at the Mt. SAC Relays, breaking his school shot put record with an effort of 57-11 3/4 to finish third and placing fifth in the discus discus /dis·cus/ (dis´kus) pl. dis´ci   [L.] disk.

--Running with the big boys: Svitek could be a valuable commodity for Newbury Park in the weight man 400-meter relay at the Spartan Relays. To be eligible, the entrants must have competed in either the shot put or discus.

, has run 15.5 in the 110-meter high hurdles and gone 20-9 1/2 in the long jump.

--Acting his age: Rio Mesa freshman Phillip Reid won the Pacific View League cross country title in the fall and has run at the varsity level in dual meets this season. But Reid will compete in the frosh-soph division at the Spartan Relays.

In Reid's absence, Rio Mesa athletes to watch at the varsity level include sprinter Mike Lairanzo, Michael Alexander Michael Charles Alexander, (November 20 1920 – December 19 2004), was a British Captain in the Special Boat Service, and a German Army Prisoner of War held captive at Oflag IV-C. , long jumper Chris Muller Mul·ler , Hermann Joseph 1890-1967.

--Resting on its laurels: Royal, which tied Rio Mesa for the boys' sweepstakes title last year, will not compete in the Spartan Relays.

The Highlanders, who defeated Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  and two-time defending Marmonte League champion Newbury Park to win its first league dual meet title since 1988 last week, are taking the weekend off to rest for the Ventura County championships April 28.

--Easy as 1-2-3: A key event in Royal's 62-61 victory over Thousand Oaks was a sweep in the 880 yards led by junior Tim Ramirez.

Ramirez is the latest family standout at Royal. Brother Chris captured the 1996 Marmonte League cross country title. Sister Laurie helped the Highlanders to their first postseason berth in cross country in 1998.
