Matinee idols and movie stars have always inspired fashion trends.

Platinum-bleached hair was popularized by Jean Harlow, and her curve-conscious bias-cut gowns are still associated with vintage movie-star glamour. Lana Turner showed us how a basic twinset twin·set or twin set

The world's women still look to Hollywood for glamour to call their own, but this year it's a whole lot easier - and cheaper. Instead of searching endlessly for a dress that sort of looks like what your favorite star wore to the Oscars, you can get a hot copy for about $250 in real-women sizes like 12 and 14.

Schwartz that hits stores this week.

The designer for the ABS label says he's always had an evening collection, but this year's Oscars had a number of glamorous gowns worth copying.

``I'd love to take all the credit (for the idea), but it's a team effort,'' he said during an interview in his L.A. showroom. ``My employees got off work early to watch the arrivals on TV, and we talked on the phone about which dresses looked the best, and girls quickly made sketches from the TV screen. But not all gowns lend themselves to turn-on-a-dime fashion,'' said Schwartz. According to according to

fashion's newest knock-off king, he and his staff look for dresses with good taste that will appeal to their targeted customer, who Schwartz describes as confident and elegant, between the ages of 25 and 55.

``We also look for dresses that are forgiving to figure flaws and will work on a woman who's a size 2 or 14. Styles that are straightforward, have a semi A-line silhouette and side slits are the easiest,'' he explained, ``while gowns cut on the bias are more difficult.'' He also omits expensive trims like the mink on Kidman's gown, but used the same color and his own interpretation of the embroidery across the front of the dress. And for those women who can't wear chartreuse, he also offers it in burgundy.

Although he didn't hear from Kidman, many of the stars - including Lauren Holly Lauren Michael Holly (born October 28, 1963) is an American actress. Biography

The Oscar Watch collection has been so successful with retail buyers that Schwartz is already working on his new Emmy collection, inspired by the yellow Vera Wang gown worn by Kristen Johnston of ``3rd Rock From the Sun,'' ``Mad About You'' star Helen Hunt's silver sequins and ``NYPD NYPD New York City Police Department (since 1845; New York City, NY, USA)

gown. ``These women are ladies, and they show that fashion is no longer about drugs and sex ... or falling out of a dress,'' said Schwartz.

Not shy about turning a profit on head-turning gowns, Schwartz has cashed in on Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's wedding gown, but that's where he draws the line on royalty. ``You'll probably start seeing clothing inspired by Princess Di, but not from me. ... Her death is a tragedy,'' he said.

The Oscar Watch collection is available at Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue Saks Fifth Avenue is a chain of upscale American department stores that is owned and operated by Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises (SFAE), a subsidiary of Saks Incorporated. It competes in the elite luxury department store market with Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys New , ABS stores in Pasadena and Santa Monica, and Bloomingdale's. The latter has planned several runway shows, including one tonight at its Sherman Oaks store.

The Emmy collection will arrive in time for Christmas and New Year's parties, Schwartz said.
