HAUSER AFFIRMS PRIVATE LAND HARVEST AND CONTINUED INCREASES IN TAXOL ACTIVITIES

BOULDER, Colo., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hauser Chemical Research Inc. (NASDAQ: HAUS), the only commercial producer of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Taxol, announced today that recent news concerning the elimination of Pacific yew bark harvesting from federal forests indicates that the amount of bark from private lands will provide adequate Taxol while alternative sources are developed. In addition, planning for the yew bark harvest from private lands in the Pacific Northwest is ahead of last year. The harvest from private land this year should dramatically exceed the harvest from last year.
According to Thomas A. Scales, president and chief operations officer, "The conversion of our original production facility for the production of Taxol, 10-deacetyl baccatin III (10-DAB), and other taxanes from yew needles, yew clippings and cultivated yew trees is on schedule for completion late this summer." The current precursor in development for semi-synthesis is 10-DAB. Hauser's advanced technology for the production of Taxol has been improved over the past three years and applied to numerous raw materials. Research and process improvements at Hauser are resulting in more efficient processes with higher yields from raw materials. Hauser's processes yield Taxol and several Taxol precursors including 10-DAB.
"We plan to provide precursor material in the future for semi- synthesis of Taxol. The total synthesis of Taxol has not yet been achieved by the research community and even if this technique is accomplished, it is expected to be very complex, costly and not commercially viable," said Dr. Dean P. Stull, chairman and chief executive officer of Hauser. "As a result, Bristol-Myers Squibb and other pharmaceutical companies active in developing Taxol and Taxol derivatives are focusing on semi-synthetic approaches where natural raw materials still form the starting point."
Currently, Hauser is in the second year of a three-year supply agreement with Bristol which contains two, two-year extension options. The contract is valued at more than $100,000,000. The contract calls for Hauser to supply Taxol from various raw materials. Although the bark of the Pacific yew tree is currently the only FDA acceptable raw material, in the future Taxol may be produced from other raw materials and semi-synthesis.
Hauser has isolated other taxanes from several raw materials. These taxanes are crucial new compounds for the preparation of Taxol derivatives, for which Hauser has patents pending. Several of these patentable derivatives, in laboratory testing, show excellent tubulin binding activity. Hauser is increasing its efforts to advance this technology.
