HATS OFF TO THE ALSO-RANS; WEB SITE SALUTES UNHERALDED GEMS OF THE YEAR IN FILM.Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Daily News Staff Writer Before the buzz over Academy Award nominations dies down each year, critics and audience members inevitably begin pining for the movies and acting performances that didn't get an Oscar nod. They bemoan be·moan tr.v. be·moaned, be·moan·ing, be·moans 1. To express grief over; lament. 2. To express disapproval of or regret for; deplore: and analyze the exclusions, but they just as quickly turn their attention back to those who will have a chance to grace award ceremony stages during the season. Not so among the reviewers and editor of Audience Magazine, a Simi Valley-based online commentary on film. The writers, many of whom are film production insiders and self-proclaimed movie buffs, have come up with their own brand of awards - less prestigious than the Oscars, but with arguably much less industry pressure - to be released today online. ``We're like a gadfly gadfly, name for various biting flies, especially those that attack livestock, e.g., the botfly and the horsefly. , '' editor Bob Wilson Bob Wilson is the name of:
Dubbed the MUP MUP - Multiple Universal naming convention Provider and MUM Awards, for the Most Unappreciated Performances and Most Unappreciated Movies, the 27th annual list was compiled by a group of the magazine's 12 regular contributors as a way to honor those actors and production crews not recognized by mainstream organizations giving out awards. This year marks the first time the list is available on the Internet - the result of the 30-year-old magazine going completely online last year. It was expected to be available today at www.audiencemag.com. But this is no organized Top 10 list, not even a Top Five summation of Best Actors. And it has no trophy for a winner to take home. It's merely a pat on the back to a hodgepodge of actors and movies that individual writers felt had to be recognized somewhere - even in a small publication like theirs. While the winners were largely the result of individual preferences among the writers, there was one that three of the five agreed did not get the recognition from the critics and the audience that it deserved - ``The Big Lebowski.'' Reviewer John Stackpole said that the movie by Joel and Ethan Coen was noteworthy for its plot, religious symbolism and humorous political commentary. ``Critics weren't happy because it wasn't `Fargo.' No, it was more like `Barton Fink,' '' he wrote of the brothers' critically acclaimed sleeper hit vs. their 1991 movie ignored by audiences. Wilson said there could be several reasons that good movies are ignored by those handing out awards: poor marketing, bad timing for premieres and just plain rotten luck. Wilson, a retired typesetter See imagesetter. who lives in Simi Valley, started his magazine in 1968 as a printed newsletter circulated among friends. The online version began as a supplement in 1996 before becoming the main magazine in October. Since then, he said, it has logged 11,714 hits, and he expects about 15 to 40 hits a day. Wilson said many of the reviewers have experience in film production - as actors or producers of independent films, or are film professors. Not all of them are professional writers. Therefore, the way they approach a film might be different than other critics. ``Our reviewers are more emotionally invested in what they're seeing,'' Wilson said. ``Having spent our lives doing nothing but going to the movies, we're a very receptive group. But at the same time, we can get the most disappointed.''
