FONTANA - No driver has ever won the NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Busch Series The NASCAR Busch Series is a stock car racing series owned and operated by NASCAR. It is NASCAR's "minor league" circuit (often compared to Triple-A baseball), and is a proving ground for drivers who wish to step up to the organization's "big league" circuit, the Nextel Cup.  and Cup Series championship in the same year.

is all but half way there.

Harvick finished 15th in the Cup race at California Speedway The California Speedway is a two-mile, low-banked, D-shaped oval superspeedway in Fontana, California, similar to that of "sister track" Michigan International Speedway. It is located approximately 40 miles east of Los Angeles on the site of the former Kaiser Steel mill.  on Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. . If he maintains his third-place spot in the standings, he will be 10 points behind the leader when the Chase starts Sept. 17 at New Hampshire International Speedway New Hampshire International Speedway is a 1.058 mile (1703 m) oval track which has hosted NASCAR racing since the 1990s. It is commonly referred to by its location, Loudon. .

After finishing second in Saturday night's Busch Series race at California Speedway, Harvick is leading that series' standings by 567 points. He could miss a race, heck he could miss three, and still be in good position to win the Busch Series championship.

Winning the Cup championship, that's another story entirely.

He is more than likely going to qualify for the Chase for the Championship, the 10-race playoff to determine the Nextel Cup The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series is NASCAR's top racing series. It was formerly known as the Strictly Stock Series (1949), Grand National Series (1950-1971), and the Winston Cup Series (1972-2003).  Series champion. He is third in points with one race to go before the Chase starts.

``I'm pretty happy to be in that position,'' Harvick said about having a chance to win the Busch Series and Cup Series championships. ``If we can make the Chase and do what we need to do, then go race as hard as we can the last 10 races, that could be a lot of fun.''

In the three-year existence of the Chase, Harvick has yet to qualify.

Even though he has not been a Cup championship contender the past two years, Harvick is the only driver who has ever come close to winning both championships in the same year. He won the Busch Series championship and was fifth in the Cup standings in 2001.

That was the same year Harvick took over Dale Earnhardt's car after he died in a final-lap crash in the Daytona 500. It was also the year Harvick recorded his highest finish in the Cup standings in five years of Cup racing.

That was in the days before the Chase. Who knows how the championship would have played out if the Chase was in place then.

Harvick was fifth in the race at New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E).  in July. Kyle Busch, another Chase contender who is currently fifth in points, won the New Hampshire race.

Whoever comes out of New Hampshire with a high finish is going to have a marked advantage in the Chase. Since Harvick and Busch had good finishes earlier this year, they have to be considered favorites again.

``Everything has been better this year,'' Harvick said. ``We've run better everywhere and the cars have performed well.''

There are 11 Busch Series races remaining, and they are all at tracks coupled with Cup Series races. Harvick should have no reason to miss a Busch Series race. It makes it much easier to challenge for both championships.

Unfortunately for the rest of the Busch Series drivers, Harvick has the luxury of taking a break if he wanted and not losing much ground.

The Busch Series championship is well within reach for Harvick. The real challenge will be if he can jump out to a fast start in the Chase and be a factor to win the Cup championship, too. That he is a factor at all is indicative of how far his team has progressed in recent years.

``That's the main thing,'' Harvick said. ``The whole organization has turned around and is going in the right direction.''
