HARVEST FESTIVAL TO REAP TRADITIONS OF AMERICA.

Byline: Daily News

Palmdale Playhouse's second annual Harvest Moon harvest moon, full moon occurring nearest to the autumnal equinox, about Sept. 23. During harvest moon the retardation (later rising each night) of the moon is at a minimum because of the relation of the moon's path to the horizon. On several nights in succession the moonrise is at nearly the same time, and there is full moonlight almost from sunset to sunrise if the sky is unclouded. Festival will offer three days of shows in the tradition of Americana.

The weekend will kick off at 8 p.m. today with John McEuen, formerly of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, performing a mix of music from Old West style to modern acoustic rock that will combine his storytelling ability with a celebration of America, past and present.

In the tradition of the ancient bards, two storytelling concerts from Milbre Burch and Rochel Coleman will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Telling folk tales, legends, fables, and myths, including the tale of African-American cowboy Deadwood Deadwood, city (1990 pop. 1,830), seat of Lawrence co., W S.Dak.; settled 1876 after discovery of gold. A Black Hills tourist center, it is also a trade hub for a lumbering, stock-raising, and mining region. Built in a narrow canyon, with houses climbing the steep sides, Deadwood Gulch (so called because its trees had been killed by fire) boomed and waned with the discovery and abandonment of nearby gold and silver mines. Dick, Burch and Coleman have both earned reputations as gifted tale tellers.

The weekend will conclude with An Afternoon of Music, Stories, and More, which will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday. The community theater afternoon is a tribute to Americana and folklore, sponsored by the Palmdale Visual Arts Program and the Palmdale Writers Roundtable.

The event will feature a blending of music, American Indian drumming, dancing, storytelling, and poetry readings. The Palmdale Youth & Community Dance Company will perform an original piece titled ``Pioneer.''

Three-day ticket packages are $24 for adults; $18 for senior citizens, members of the military and students; and $8 for children 12 and under. Tickets to McEuen or Burch/Coleman are $12 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, members of the military and students; and $8 for children under 12. For An Afternoon of Music, Stories and More, ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for all others.
