``I'm not saying I knew it was going to happen, but I was concerned (entering the match),'' Wolverines coach Jesse Quiroz said.

Concern turned to panic as Harvard-Westlake fell behind two-games-to-one and 4-0 in the fourth game before rallying for the 15-3, 13-15, 8-15, 15-8, 15-4 victory.

The Wolverines (21-5), who advance to Tuesday night's Southern Regional championship match, were in perilous territory after breezing past Notre Dame Academy (19-4) in a stress-free game one.

``I think a lot of it was us not concentrating anymore,'' Harvard-Westlake junior middle blocker Kelly Ayers said. ``I know after the first game we were a little overconfident o·ver·con·fi·dent

Leslie Meller with the taller Ashley Julian helped Harvard-Westlake escape a scoring drought.

``We're pretty big in the middle and Ashley started setting more there,'' Ayers said.

After failing to score a point on eight consecutive serves spanning the third and fourth games, the Wolverines produced four in succession behind kills by Joanna August and Anne Jakle and an Ayers block.

``There were four or five sideouts where if we had been able to get to our fifth or sixth point the momentum might have swung our way,'' Notre Dame Academy coach Tom Brenner said. ``We had them off balance but we couldn't keep them there. . . . When they went to the bigger setter that hurt us too.''

Ayers (14 kills), August (19), Jakle (21), Cortney Schultz (seven) and Liz Gelbard (nine) distributed the statistics between them. The two-headed setting tandem of Meller and Julian finished with 36 and 29 assists, respectively.

``It was such a team effort. Everyone really did their jobs tonight,'' Ayers said.

Schultz, a talented freshman who normally doesn't serve in favor of defensive specialist Jessica Krondstadt, was forced to take her turn in the rotation when Quiroz had run out of allowed substitutions for her. But Schultz finished off the fourth game with an ace and another strong serving effort eventually put down by Jakle.

The Wolverines then returned to their game one form in the fifth frame.

Alyssa Rylander had 16 kills and Ashley Fulton 15 for the Regals.
