HARVARD-WESTLAKE STATE BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: MESSAGE RECEIVED.

Byline: Vincent Bonsingore Daily News Staff Writer

Harvard-Westlake High had just been denied a second consecutive Southern Section championship in a 53-46 loss to Morningside in the Division III-A final. As his players cried around him in the dressing room at the Long Beach Pyramid pyramid, structure

``We've used (the section loss) to our benefit,'' Taylor said. ``I told the girls there were other teams that lost the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. To be honest, I wasn't even sure at the time whether that was true or not, but that's what I told them.''

Double standard? The girls were upset when Harvard-Westlake refused requests for a rooter bus to transport students to last Saturday's Southern California final in Long Beach. Taylor said administrators told him since the game fell on a weekend, students could find their own way to Long Beach.

Of course, the girls remembered a bus being available last fall when the football team played in the Southern Section final . . . on a Saturday.

``They were hurt, and I agree with them,'' Taylor said. ``They kept telling me, `But coach, the football team had a rooter bus and that game was on a Saturday.' ''

They've got a point.

In the school's defense, though, officials had only one day to prepare for Saturday's final after the Wolverines qualified with a win Thursday night.

Elledge also points out attempts were made in the past to secure rooter buses for the girls' games, but there was always a lack of interest among students.

``If we get a bus and only five kids show up, we've still got to pay for the whole bus,'' Elledge said.
