HARVARD-WESTLAKE PREVAILS : UDEZE LEADS THE WAY AS ALEMANY STREAKS END H.-W. 56 ALEMANY 48.

Byline: Dave Desmond Daily News Staff Writer

The team of 1997-98 just arrived ahead of schedule.

Harvard-Westlake High School, a young team that had never finished higher than fourth in the Mission League, ended two of the area's longest girls' basketball winning streaks Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

The visiting Indians (18-3, 7-1) had entered with an 18-game winning streak and had not lost a Mission League game since January of 1993, a run that had stretched 43 games.

``We've come such a long way,'' said first-year coach Brian Taylor Brian Taylor (born April 10, 1962), is a former Australian rules footballer and now AFL commentator. Playing career

And there's a long road ahead for the No. 7 Wolverines (18-6, 7-1).

Sophomore post Omelogo Udeze had 22 points and 12 rebounds.

``She carried us tonight,'' said assistant coach Orlando Woolridge Orlando Vernada Woolridge (born December 16 1959 in Bernice, Louisiana) is a former professional basketball player in the NBA.

Udeze got a lot of help from two young guards, as well.

Freshman Brooke Porter scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as Harvard-Westlake outscored the three-time defending league champs 21-14.

And junior Corrie Roberts added six points and seven steals and combined with Porter to limit Kelli Kobayashi, Alemany's All-Southern guard to 14 points.

Roberts grew up in Sylmar - Alemany's backyard - but enrolled at Harvard-Westlake because her father Lew serves as the school's wrestling coach. For three years, Roberts paid for that decision.

``I've been trying to beat them for three years,'' said a teary Roberts, who came up with four crucial steals in the final quarter. ``Finally. This is great.''

Not so great for Alemany, which entered with three players suffering high temperatures and another nursing an ulcer.

But the Indians weren't about to lean on excuses.

The Indians struggled against the Wolverines' defense throughout, and finished 11 of 61 (18 percent) from the field.
