HARVARD-WESTLAKE FACES SAN CLEMENTE.

Byline: Rizza Yap and Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writers

In their first meeting of the season, the Harvard-Westlake boys' water polo team edged San Clemente by a score of 5-4. Today the two Division I programs square off again for a Southern Section quarterfinal matchup at the Wolverines pool. Harvard-Westlake coach Rich Corso said a quick start is key to winning playoff games.

``There's no time in the first period to size up an opponent,'' said Corso, whose team knocked off Canyon of Anaheim 18-5 in the first round. ``You have to get at them immediately, defensively and offensively.''

Div. III Crescenta Valley also advances to the quarterfinals, playing El Segundo after a 22-1 routing of San Marino in the first round.

In Div. IV, Royal knocked off Lompoc 10-8 in the first round, and Agoura's 22-2 win over Milken on Friday made way for a quarterfinal matchup today at San Luis Obispo.

A second-round Div. I matchup in girls' tennis saw one Marmonte League team eliminate another. Simi Valley earned a spot in the quarterfinals after defeating Camarillo 13-5 on Monday.

Ten girls' volleyball teams also will see semifinal action tonight, seven of which will play at home. Nine of the 10 matches will be at 7 p.m.

One team not originally expected to advance this far is Calabasas, which upset last year's finalist San Luis Obispo and fourth-seeded South Hills. Next up for the 14-5 Coyotes is top-seeded Corona del Mar.

Two Marmonte League teams, Royal and Westlake, also will play host. The Highlanders, seeded second in Division I-A, will face third-seeded Marina, while Westlake, the top seed in Division II-A and ranked second in the state, hosts Rim of the World.

The other home team is Cornerstone Christian, the defending Division V-A champion. The Eagles, seeded third this season, hosts second-seeded Valley Christian of Santa Maria.

Two Division III-A teams are away. Third-seeded Harvard-Westlake is at second-seeded Ocean View, and No. 4 La Canada is at top-seeded and defending state champion Bishop Montgomery.
