HARTMARX'S KUPPENHEIMER MEN'S CLOTHIERS FINDS NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY 'WELL-SUITED' FOR ITS NINE NEW STORES

             HARTMARX'S KUPPENHEIMER MEN'S CLOTHIERS FINDS
NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY WELL-SUITED' FOR ITS NINE NEW STORES
ATLANTA, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers, a national menswear manufacturer and retailer, is giving the northeast a new look this week by formally unveiling the latest additions to its collection -- nine new stores in New York and New Jersey.
In its first large-scale foray into the New York metropolitan area, the Atlanta-based company's nine new shops will all be located within Sears stores. Kuppenheimer and Sears began this "store-within-a-store" concept in 1989 following the giant retailer's departure from the tailored men's clothing business that same year.
The New York stores are mostly located on Long Island: East Northport, Hicksville and Lake Grove, with the fourth one on Staten Island. The five New Jersey stores will be found within Sears stores in Jersey City, New Brunswick, Paramus, Rockaway and Wayne. Openings are staggered from late October to late November.
"The New York metropolitan market poses tremendous opportunities for us," said Dave McMahon, president and chief executive officer of Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers. "We're confident of our ability to succeed here because our quality, style and popular pricing are just as important to people here as they are to people in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and the rest of the country."
Kuppenheimer, with more than 150 stores nationwide, began leasing space within selected Sears stores two years ago to reach mall shoppers and establish a mutually beneficial business relationship. The Kuppenheimer shops are scaled down versions of typical Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers stores. By year's end, Kuppenheimer will have set up its own distinctive shops within 32 Sears stores across the country.
"We believe this expansion fits well with our overall strategy in the men's department by offering customers a complete, fashion-oriented and moderately priced line of apparel, with our sportswear lines of national men's brands such as Dockers, Bugle Boy, Levi's, Farah, Adidas, Shah Safari and Reebok, along with our newest edition -- suiting separates," said Warren E. Flick, vice president men's and children's apparel.
During the past eight years, Kuppenheimer has evolved into one of the country's most talked-about men's specialty stores. McMahon has attributed this success to its unique position as a manufacturer of its own clothing and to its distribution through only Kuppenheimer stores, thereby providing consumers with a wide selection of suits, sportcoats, slacks and accessories at exceptional prices and quality.
With suits priced between $165 - $265, Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers appeals to the businessman who wears a suit to work most days, and doesn't want to pay an exorbitant amount to find top quality clothing.
Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hartmarx Corporation (NYSE: HMX) of Chicago, one of the country's leading manufacturers and retailers of quality men's and women's tailored clothing. The Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers division is headquartered in Norcross, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta.
