``The girls were so excited,'' said Carlos Gomez, a Hart assistant coach. ``I didn't know how much the girls liked firemen before. We were extremely grateful that the they had the time to come out, from the bottom of Hart's heart we're thankful to them.''

--It runs in the family: For a person who had never played softball, Cathy Giordano has been successful as Hart head coach. She has coached her team to a 12-3, 2-0 record this season.

It must be genetic. Giordano has two daughters now playing Division I softball - one at Washington and other at Arizona. Giordano's niece, Brandi, played softball at Ball State University and is now the head coach at Agoura.

``Her entire family is very talented,'' said assistant coach Roland Wrinkle. ``She raised four kids and they are all extraordinary athletes. She's a great coach and really understands the players.''
