The Hart High softball team was stunned this summer when longtime coach Cathy Giordano retired. Now, after leading candidate Krista Humphreys pulled out to accept a teaching position in Lancaster, the team wants Giordano back.

Senior shortstop Emily Sudik said she doesn't want to play her senior year if Giordano and assistants Roland Wrinkle and Tim Melton aren't around to, at the least, ease the transition to a new coaching staff.

Sudik and several other players have met with Hart administrators to ask that Giordano be rehired.

``The whole softball team has gone into the office to see if there's any way we can get Cathy back, because right now we don't have a softball program or a coach,'' Sudik said. ``If we don't get Cathy back, there's not going to be any sense of continuity. We'd even be OK if she was able to come back and help train somebody.

``But I'm feeling like I need to concentrate on school and get a job, and if I didn't have someone there I was comfortable with, I didn't want to come back. Cathy and the other coaches have really been there for me as a player and personally.''

Sudik, who has been offered recruiting trips by UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii and Long Island University, said she intends to keep playing but isn't interested in playing in high school if Giordano doesn't return.

Several coaches, including Littlerock's Sarah Adams, whom Giordano has said in the past she admired, have applied for the job.
