HART PAIR MAKING SPLASH : INDIANS FOLLOWING LEAD TO POSSIBLE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP.Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer Hart High School's boys' swim team's league championship drought has lasted seven years. It might end next week. If the Indians win next Friday's Foothill League final meet, it will be largely because of sophomores Ryan Parmenter and Anthony Ervin Anthony Lee Ervin (born May 26, 1981 in Burbank, California) to a white mother and a black father, is an American swimmer who won the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Freestyle at the 2000 Summer Olympics, finishing with the same winning time as Gary Hall Jr. . They have led the Indians all season, especially in the important meets. ``They're on track for a Division I scholarship, an NCAA NCAA abbr. National Collegiate Athletic Association championship and Olympic trials,'' Hart coach Steve Neale said. Both have taken different paths to their success. Ervin, the sprinter, has followed in the tradition of his brother, Jackie, who swam at Saugus a few years ago and now competes for UC Irvine. Anthony said his brother inspired him to take up swimming, which he did eight years ago. He immediately liked it and started improving. ``I used to watch him in high school meets,'' Anthony Ervin said. ``I got to know what it would be like.'' So far, it hasn't been difficult. Neither were close to his fastest times. The butterfly isn't even his primary event. No problem. ``I don't get nervous before races,'' Ervin said. ``If you think positively, you can do it.'' Said Neale: ``When he hits the water, he just lights up. He swims like a shark.'' World Maccabi Games in July in Israel, earned the nickname ``Mr. Workhorse'' from Neale because of his long workouts. His endurance paid off against Valencia, when he swam and won three consecutive events. He started by swimming a leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay then finished first in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, setting personal bests each time. ``His 200 IM is going to be scary,'' Neale said. ``We might try to qualify him for CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. Ervin won the 100 freestyle in 46.9 seconds. Both swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:23.09). Against Saugus, Hart's toughest league challenge, Ervin won the 50 freestyle in 21.88 and the 100 freestyle in 50.41. Parmenter won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.9 and the 500 freestyle in 4:44.91. To help with that, the two, who usually swim with their club team, have appeared at Hart practices and helped non-elite swimmers with their strokes and turns. They also cheer and encourage their teammates. Parmenter recently congratulated a teammate for beating out a Saugus swimmer for fifth place and earning the point that comes with it. ``I try to pump everyone up in the races,'' Parmenter said. ``The relays are really big.''
