HART JV TOO VARIED FOR CANYON DEFENSE.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Hart High School's junior varsity team used a varied offense to beat Canyon 28-7 in a Foothill League game Friday.

Quarterback Travis Nicol completed 13 of 15 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns, receiver Ryan Haag caught seven passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns, and tailback Jason Autry rushed 12 times for 107 yards and two scores.

``They pass well, and we weren't able to cover the passes well,'' Canyon coach Chuck Wade said.

Hart coach Sean O'Brien credited offensive linemen Travis Asmus, Greg Vandermead, Stephen Hoffman and Mihdi Bathke as key to the offense's success.

``Their defense stacked up eight guys and we were able to protect the quarterback and run the ball,'' O'Brien said.

Nicol hooked up with Haag on a 44-yard touchdown on the fifth play of the game. Autry ran in from 5 and 2 yards, and Nicol found Haag for a 14-yard score in the third quarter.

Linebacker Brandon Parr and safety Garrett Fuller sparked the defense for Hart (5-1, 1-0).

Canyon's one touchdown was a 6-yard run by quarterback Julio DeLeon in the second quarter that cut Hart's lead to 14-7.

Defensively, Jeff Thomas recovered two fumbles, and Robert Hammond had a quarterback sack.

Canyon is 2-4, 0-1.

Burroughs 29, Saugus 28: The Centurions (3-3, 0-1) scored with 53 seconds to play but failed on the 2-point conversion and dropped a Foothill League opener.

Brett Draimin rushed 16 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns, one a 6-yard score, the other a 4-yard run. Quarterback David Parker threw two touchdown passes - a 4-yarder to Cheyne Cheyne (chn, chn), John 1777-1836. Flatt and 12-yarder to Nathan Steele.

Lineman Steve Genovese played well on both sides of the ball, and Brian Kalb had 11 tackles.

Valencia 6, Burbank 0: The Vikings (3-3, 1-0) earned a forfeit victory because Burbank didn't have enough players.
