Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

NEWHALL - Josh Cummings has given Hart High just the kick it's needed in the football playoffs.

According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .

In Friday's 13-0 semifinal victory over St. Francis, Cummings kicked field goals of 29 and 34 yards. He also punted six times for a 43.7 average, pinning St. Francis inside its own 20 on his first three attempts. A week earlier against Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest. , Cummings' field goals of 41 and 31 yards provided the margin of victory in a 28-23 triumph. He also punted once for 46 yards.

Cummings, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior, has nine field goals, a 39.2 punting average and 37 PATs. He also booms about 80 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone, which is important because they're automatic touchbacks in high school football.

``Things aren't going too bad,'' he said. ``Kicking is one-third of the game. It gets points, it gets field position, so it's important.''

Cummings realized how vital his kicking was when Hart's coaches decided to pull him from his duty as starting defensive back; his kicking was too important to risk injury.

``In the beginning I got a little mad about that,'' Cummings said. ``But it's all right now.''

Cummings has improved his punting. Early in the season he struggled in that department because he kicks soccer-style on place-kicks and conventionally on punts. A year ago, all he did was kick off, so he has been learning as he goes.

``It takes a lot of confidence to be a kicker Kicker

, but sometimes it's fun,'' he said. ``I kick a lot in practice, getting my leg ready. I also lift a lot of weights with my legs because kicking is hard on the legs.''

``Josh has been great, especially the last two games,'' coach Mike Herrington said. ``I'm sure he would have liked to play defensive back too, but his kicking has just helped us so much in the long run. (Before this season) I've lost a number of games because we had bad kicking. I remember when I was the coach at Bellflower bellflower, in botany
