HART GEARS UP FOR NO. 5 IN NATION.

Hart High's football team, unaccustomed to being an underdog after reaching a section championship for the sixth consecutive year, must feel like it has to slay slay

``It's going to be a battle until the end,'' Hart running back Daniel Howell said. ``But we don't feel like an underdog. That's only if you look at the numbers.

``It's about working hard on the field, and every night is a different game.''

Hart coach Mike Herrington said it's been 20 years since Hart has faced an opponent ranked among the top five in the nation: a 1983 victory over Alemany of Mission Hills when Herrington was an assistant.

``It would be a great accomplishment to win this game because Mission Viejo is one of the top teams in the nation,'' Herrington said. ``They're just so talented and well-coached, and they've got some good transfers who've come in. They've just got very talented players.''

The teams have a common opponent in Canyon. But the results don't mean much because both Hart and Mission Viejo beat Canyon by the same score of 56-21 - and both were up 42-7 at the half, which is odd if not downright spooky.

One good omen for Hart is the team gets to wear its home uniforms, and Mission Viejo will wear its visiting whites. That's because Mission Viejo isn't allowed any home games this season as punishment for using an illegal football during last year's playoffs.

Tickets will be available on campus to the public beginning Wednesday morning. They are $12, $5 for students, and there are no reserved seats. Tickets also will be available at the box office throughout the week and the night of the game.

--And a final observation about the Hart game Saturday: I counted nearly 100 sideline spectators who appeared to be doing nothing important, which seemed like a lot. I decided to watch the game from the stands in case there was a fire; I figured some of us in the sideline mass might have gotten stampeded.
