HART FORFEITURE THREATENS PLAYOFF.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

NEWHALL - Hart High's softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team has been forced to forfeit To lose to another person or to the state some privilege, right, or property due to the commission of an error, an offense, or a crime, a breach of contract, or a neglect of duty; to subject property to confiscation; or to become liable for the payment of a penalty, as the result of a  one win because of an ineligible player - and with just one game remaining, the fourth-place Indians must hope for an at-large playoff play·off also play-off

Freshman Priscilla Guevara, a transfer from Valencia High, has been ruled ineligible because of a paperwork mistake by Hart's administration, according to according to

Hart coach Cathy Giordano. Because Guevara participated in a victory over Burroughs of Burbank on April 26, that win has been overturned.

``What really makes me angry is I checked everything so carefully,'' Giordano said. ``As things turned out, Priscilla was cleared by Hart and she was cleared by the district, but she wasn't cleared by the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). . I kept asking if she was cleared and everyone kept me telling me she was. There was one piece of paperwork that wasn't signed. I'm just so mad. It's ridiculous.''

The top three teams in the Foothill League qualify for the Southern Section Div. I playoffs. With one game remaining in the regular season, Hart (13-13, 4-5) trails third-place Burroughs (12-12, 6-3) by two games, so Hart has no chance for an automatic berth.

Jose Valle, Burroughs' athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  in charge of girls' sports, confirmed Hart has forfeited for·feit

Hart girls' athletic director Linda Peckham said a misunderstanding occurred when a Southern Section representative said Guevara would be eligible because she had never played in an official game for Valencia - but it wasn't clear until later that Hart needed to file a transfer of eligibility form. Peckham said Hart self-reported the mistake.

A Southern Section spokeswoman said she anticipates some at-large entries in the Division I bracket, which pools from nine leagues. The first criterion is a record of .500 or better.

Ironically, Hart faces Burroughs today in a game Hart had hoped to win to force a tie for third place.
