SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Hart district students in 2004 kept up their scores on the SAT and remained above the state and national averages, district officials said Wednesday.

It's the same score Hart students earned on the SAT in 2003, but with a different breakdown between the verbal and mathematics sections. The district scored 530 in verbal - down two from last year, but gained two points in math for 553. Maximum score for each section is 800.

``They look pretty much in line with what we see over last year,'' said Vicki Engbrecht, Hart district's curriculum director.

Statewide, the verbal average increased two points to 496 compared with last year's average, while math scores increased one point to 519, according to according to

Hart High also earned the highest math score at 561, down three points from last year. Canyon High held the lowest at 539, up six points.

Saugus High had a sharp drop in math, scoring 555, down 18 points from 2003. Valencia High gained 14 points in math for a score of 554.

To improve SAT performance, the district is encouraging 10th-graders to take the College Board's official practice exam - the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test, Engbrecht said.

``We're trying to encourage more and more 10th-graders to take the practice SAT,'' she said. ``When they get their results, they actually get the right answers. It's really helpful for preparing kids.''

Officials also hope to convince all 10th-graders to take the practice test for the 2005-06 school year. Administrators at Golden Valley High, which just opened last month, already are working toward the goal, Engbrecht said.

``Even students who don't see themselves as going directly to college, we want to keep that door open,'' she said. ``After they take the PSAT PSAT Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test
